
All Three Orange Eights Advance to A/B Semifinals at IRA Championships

The varsity four will race in the C Final on Saturday morning
All three of Syracuse's varsity eight crews qualified for the A/B Semifinals on Saturday morning at the 2022 IRA National Championship. Additionally, the varsity four advanced to the C Final and will complete its season on Saturday at Mercer Lake County Park in West Windsor, N.J.Â
Varsity Eight (Varsity Challenge Cup)
The varsity eight began the day placing second in Heat 1 of the Varsity Challenge Cup, advancing the Orange straight to the A/B semifinals and avoiding the afternoon repechages.
The Orange clocked in at 5:46.853, 3.76 seconds behind California and 4.432 seconds ahead of Northeastern to earn a spot in the A/B semifinal.
The Orange will line up against Cornell, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth and Wisconsin at 8:50 a.m. ET on Saturday. The top three crews will advance to the Upper Final while the remaining boats will race in the Lower Final. All Finals for the Varsity Challenge Cup will be raced on Sunday.Â
Second Varsity Eight (Kennedy Challenge Cup)
The second varsity eight also finished in second place in its respective heat. The Orange finished the 2000 meter course in 5:50.411, 2.874 seconds behind California and 2.774 seconds ahead of Drexel to earn a spot in Saturday's A/B Semifinal.
'Cuse (Lane 6) will line up with Cornell, Washington, Dartmouth, Yale and Drexel at 9:10 a.m. ET Saturday morning. The top three crews will race in the Upper Final, while the bottom three will advance to the Lower Final on Sunday morning.Â
Third Varsity Eight
The 3V8 placed third in Heat 2 on Saturday morning with a time of 05:57.321 behind Yale (5:43.463) and Harvard (5:46.005). The Orange then raced in Rep2 in the afternoon and placed second, qualifying for the A/B semifinal (top three qualify) on Saturday afternoon.Â
The afternoon repechage featured nearly a 10-second improvement in the 3V8's time with better course conditions from the morning. The Orange pushed themselves in a race with Princeton (5:46.455) and Cornell (4:49.237), beating the Big Red by 1.652 seconds and finishing 1.130 seconds behind the Tigers.Â
The third varsity eight will race at 9:30 a.m. ET on Saturday. Syracuse will be in Lane 2 and will race a handful of Ivy League crews that includes Harvard, Brown, Dartmouth and Cornell as well as Boston University.Â
Varsity Four
The varsity four got the job done finishing in the top-18 of the morning time trials to advance to the A/B/C semifinals Friday afternoon. 'Cuse clocked in at 6:25.459 and placed sixth in its semifinal to advance to the C Final on Sunday morning.Â
The V4+ will line up with Wisconsin, The U.S. Naval Academy, Williams, Hobart and Oklahoma at 10:50 a.m. ET on Saturday. The Orange will be in Lane 3.Â
