Hayles' PR Propels Him to NCAA Final
6/8/2022 9:50:00 PM | Track and Field
Jaheem Hayles left no doubt on if he'd be advancing to Friday's NCAA Championship heat in the men's 110-meter hurdles.
The Orange junior transfer will wrap his first season at Syracuse contending for a national title after posting a new personal-best time of 13.44 seconds to win his semifinal heat and advance automatically to the final.
A Newark, N.J. native, Hayles bested his previous PR by a full tenth of a second and edged Michigan's Joshua Zeller by 0.01 seconds to win the heat.
Hayles' semifinal time was the third-fastest across all heats and he'll now head into Friday's nine-man final – which will have plenty of ACC flavor. Four of the nine runners are from ACC squads.
Another personal-best performance on the day came from Nathan Henderson in his final race of the season. He wrapped up his season with a time of 3:40.06 in the 1500-meter run, which was 0.39 seconds out of the final qualifying spot.
His time earned him a 14th-place finish on the national stage, which will come with Second Team All-America honors.
The semifinal round wraps on Thursday evening when Annie Boos will represent the Orange in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 9:02 p.m. ET on ESPNU. She looks to join Hayles in the NCAA finals. He'll next take to the track at 9:42 p.m. ET on Friday night on ESPN.
