The Orange (2-0) defense held the Huskies to just 202 total yards, while Syracuse's offense piled up 465 total yards, including 309 through the air. 'Cuse did not punt until the fourth quarter.
Syracuse was led by a multi-faceted night from quarterback Garrett Shrader, who delivered a near perfect evening with 287 yards, three passing touchdowns and completing 20-of-23 pass attempts. Shrader rushed for two touchdowns as well. Sean Tucker led the ground attack with 112 rushing yards on 27 carries, scoring once.
Garrett Williams and Alijah Clark led the Orange with seven total tackles apiece, including four solo stops each. Marlowe Wax's strip sack that setup yet another SU score was the defensive highlight in a night that the team allowed just 202 total yards. Mikel Jones had 1.5 tackles for loss, accounting for nine yards lost. He also contributed on special teams as a UConn player muffed the first punt for Syracuse, bouncing the ball right into Jones' arms. Â
"Really excited about the performance that we put in," said head coach Dino Babers. "Offense, defense and special teams. I didn't want to get trapped and the kids listened. They didn't just hear me talking, they listened, and they went out and played a clean game... I look at the penalties from last week to this week and that tells me that they were focused. It was an extremely physical game, but our guys didn't pack it in, they hit back."
Syracuse had the first three scoring plays of the game, taking a 17-0 lead in the first quarter. Shrader accounted for his first touchdown on a 1-yard rush, jumping over the line and extending the ball into the end zone, finishing off a 12-play, 69 yard drive five minutes into the game. The first score was setup by a Courtney Jackson reception in traffic that was downed just short of the goal line.. With four and a half minutes left, Andre Szmyt put through a 27-yard field goal for a 10-0 Syracuse lead. One minute later, Syracuse forced a three-and-out to get the ball back. Shrader hit Damien Alford down the middle for a 47-yard touchdown and a 17-0 lead on a beautifully thrown ball over the top of the Huskies' secondary.
UConn (1-2) scored its first touchdown of the game with 11:45 to play in the second quarter as Devontae Houston ran it in from 28 yards out. Both Huskies' touchdowns came from outside the red zone and combined to account for nearly half of their total yards.Â
After the UConn TD, the Orange had three straight scores, led by another Szmyt field goal, this time from 28-yards out. Shrader connected with Courtney Jackson for an 18-yard pass and catch with 28 seconds left in the half for a 27-7 Syracuse lead at the break.
Two and a half minutes into the fresh half, Tucker punched it in from two yards out as the Orange built the lead up to 34-7 just 12:28 into the third quarter. Midway through the third quarter, UConn scored its second and final touchdown as Aaron Turner broke a tackle and scored from 56 yards out.
The Orange responded however, as Shrader scampered for a seven yards touchdown, his second on the ground of the night. Only 53 seconds into the fourth quarter, Shrader accounted for his fifth touchdown, hitting D'Marcus Adams for a 39-yard touchdown to put the Orange up 48-14.Â
With another 100-yard rushing game, Tucker moved up one spot on the Syracuse career rushing list. Tucker now has 2,234 rushing yards, moving into 13th place and passing Kyle McIntosh. Tucker is now 152 yards back from Ernie Davis' 2,386 career rushing yards, while also tying with Walter Reyes for third all-time with his 14th career game with at least 100 rushing yards.Â
Shrader moved into a tie for 19th place in all-time for career rushing touchdowns with 17 in his Orange career. Tucker also moved up on that list, tying for 17th with the 18th rushing touchdown of his career.Â
Syracuse extended its winning streak over UConn to four. The Huskies' 14 points were the fewest allowed by the Orange since holding UConn to 10 points in a 40-10 Orange win in 2012. It is the fewest points Syracuse has allowed UConn when playing on the road. Through the first two games, Syracuse has allowed just 21 points, the fewest allowed through two games since allowing 17 points in the first two games of 2015.Â
The Orange return to the JMA Wireless Dome to open a four-game homestand next Saturday against Purdue. Tickets are available at Cuse.com/Tickets - and fans can still purchase season tickets and partial plans with the Orange still set to have six more home games. Opening kickoff vs. the Boilermakers is set for Noon on ESPN2.
