The Syracuse men's and women's rowing teams, in conjunction with the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association (S.A.R.A.), hosted the 10th Annual Evening at Ten Eyck on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the James A. Ten Eyck Memorial Boathouse in Liverpool.Â
The evening was complete with a boat dedication for the 'Team 44' shell and four inductions into the SARA Hall of Fame. Alumni and supporters of the men's and women's teams, current student athletes, and staff gathered together for the first time since the 2019 Evening at Ten Eyck to celebrate the accomplishments of the Orange rowing programs.
The Team 44 shell was added to the Syracuse women's rowing fleet last season after a group of student-athlete's parents raised the money for a new boat in the spring of 2021. Team 44 was named by the 2021 squad, which had the program's highest NCAA finish in school history and was the 44th year of women's varsity rowing at Syracuse. Several 2021 graduates were in attendance for the ceremonial christening of the boat led by head coach Luke McGee.Â
Syracuse head coaches Dave Reischman and Luke McGee each gave a State of the Program update to all attendees to kick off the evening program after dinner.Â
Three of the four S.A.R.A. Hall of Fame inductions were posthumous, including the original Syracuse navy of 1872, Bernard Dawson '22, and Bartosz Szczyrba '07. Tracy (Rude) Brown '90 was in attendance for her induction and gave a riveting speech about the growth of the program at Syracuse and the opportunities the sport provided her throughout her life.Â
About the Original Syracuse Navy 1872Â
Two years after the founding of Syracuse University and during their Freshman year in 1872, Charles Holden and George Hine unofficially founded and funded the Syracuse rowing program, soliciting local merchants for funds for a boat, and constructed a wooden "shack" boathouse via their own ingenuity. The First Syracuse Navy consisted of Charles Holden, Elwin Plaisted, Edwin Redhead, Chester Congdon, Frederick Esmond, A.F. Berrian, James Gilbert, Nathaniel Wheeler, William Wood, and William Dunlop. In 1874, the first "Syracuse Navy" drew up the original constitution, and set up the terms under which rowing equipment and property be given to the students. This year marks the 150th year anniversary of the birth of Syracuse Rowing.Â
Bernard Dawson - 1922
One hundred years after his graduation, Dawson was honored by the Syracuse Alumni Rowing Association with a Hall of Fame induction. Dawson was one of the original founders of S.A.R.A. and served as president. He was instrumental in getting the original quonset huts funded and constructed. Dawson also served as the president of the Syracuse Regatta Association in 1952, which brought the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) to Syracuse, N.Y., for several decades.Â
Tracy (Rude) Brown - 1990
Brown was a member of the U.S. Women's National Team from 1990-92 and collected multiple medals during her acing career with the Red, White & Blue including a fourth-place finish in the National Championship in 1990 and second place in the World Championship Eight that same year. She was a member of the Director's Cup Four at the Head of the Charles in 2010 and was the first female president of S.A.R.A. after many years of being a staunch supporter of both Orange programs.Â
Bartosz Szczyrba - 2007
Szczyrba was a member of Poland's World Championship Eight in 2003 and helped Poland to a sixth-place finish at the U23 World Championships in 2004 competing in the Four. He was in the winning boat of the 2004 World University Championships Four in 2004 and competed with Orange teammate Dan O'Shaughnessy in the 2008 Oxford Cambridge reserve race. Unfortunately, Szczyrba passed away in 2011 at the age of 29. His teammate and friend Dan O'Shaughnessy gave a heartfelt speech and capped it with a toast in his honor during his S.A.R.A. Hall of Fame induction.Â
The 11th Annual Evening at Ten Eyck is scheduled for Sept. 16, 2023.Â
