Orange Lose Season Opener at #6 Colgate
9/24/2022 6:11:00 PM | Ice Hockey
The Orange hockey team opened the 2022-23 campaign with a 3-0 loss at #6 Colgate on Saturday. Orange goaltender Arielle DeSmet recorded 32 saves in the game, increasing her career total to 1,456, which ranks fifth in Syracuse history.
Â
"Arielle made some timely saves for us that allowed us to stay in the game early and allowed us to get our feet under us which was great," Smith said. "Any good goalie can find ways to keep you in games when you need her and I thought she definitely did that for us tonight. The message after the game was how proud I was that we fought to the end. I thought our third period was our best period. Going into the third down three you can make a decision right then to throw in the towel and I was very happy we made the decision to come out and fight for the final 20 and make that our best period. From that it is learning what made our third period the most successful period and then finding ways to bring that out in our game more often."
Â
Colgate took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Sara Steward, assisted by Sarah Roger and Kayle Osborne, at the 7:13 mark in the first period. In the second period the Raiders extended their lead to three on a pair of power play goals by Neena Brick, assisted by Sydney Bard and Danielle Serdachny, and Kaitlyn O'Donohoe, assisted by Kristyna Kaltounkova.
Â
Syracuse had opportunities to get on the board in the second and third periods. Midway through the second stanza, junior Tatum White fed a pass from the corner to junior Rayla Clemons whose shot went just wide left. In the third period, freshman Maya D'Arcy took a pass at center ice and carried it to the Colgate goal where her shot was saved by the Osborne.
Â
Prior to the game, Smith announced the 2022-23 team captains. Five leaders will represent the Orange with a letter on their sweater including captain Lauren Bellefontaine and alternate captains Mae Batherson, White, Clemons and Anna Leschyshyn. Bellefontaine was an alternate captain last season.
"I am excited to work with this group. Leadership is an ongoing process so to be able to work alongside those five and grow together is extremely exciting. The message to the team is that it is horizontal leadership. We all have opportunities to lead and we need to make sure we are finding those opportunities in which we can step up and lead. Just because we have five captains does not mean they are the only leaders on our team."
Â
Syracuse will play a pair of games at Merrimack on Friday, September 30 (2 pm) and Saturday, October 1 (2 pm) at Lawler Rink in North Andover, Mass.
