Three Earn All-ACC First Team Honors
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Three Syracuse University field hockey players have earned All-ACC recognition, including a major award. The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced its postseason honors Monday afternoon ahead of the 2023 ACC Field Hockey Tournament, which begins play on Tuesday.
Eefke van den Nieuwenhof was selected as the ACC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Year, in addition to All-ACC First Team honors. Fellow Orange Charlotte de Vries and Pieke van de Pas were also named All-ACC First Team.
Van den Nieuwenhof is the second Orange back to win ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors, joining Alyssa Manley in 2015. De Vries becomes the first player in program history to earn All-ACC honors five times, while van den Nieuwenhof is the fourth Syracuse player to earn All-ACC honors in all four seasons. Van de Pas is in her first season with the Orange.
Backing a defense that surrenders fewer than two goals per game, van den Nieuwenhof and the Orange surrendered just 60 penalty corners all season while leading the ACC with 131 corner attempts. The Suest, Netherlander helps the Orange allow just 4.6 opponent shots on goal all season. Offensively, van den Nieuwenhof leads the Orange with 30 points behind 13 goals and four assists, converting three game-winning goals and a national best six penalty strokes. She added a defensive save at Duke during the regular season.
A mainstay on the All-ACC teams, de Vries has been named All-ACC First Team three times in her 'Cuse career, earning her first First Team nod since the 2020 campaign. De Vries, having played a midfield and forward role throughout the season, is the team's third leading point getter, potting eight goals and five assists for 21 points. In the regular season finale, she added an assist for her 120th career point, tying her for the third-most all-time in program history.
In her first season with the Orange, van de Pas is second on the team with 27 points, posting 10 goals with seven helpers. She has been efficient on the attack, scoring 10 goals on 36 shots on goal, a goals-to-shots on goal percentage of nearly .300. A distribution threat as well, van de Pas leads Syracuse with her seven helpers.
Margo Carlin (Boston College) and Alaina McVeigh (Duke) were the Co-Offensive Players of the Year while Piper Hampsch (Duke) was the Goalkeeper of the Year in the league. Charly Bruder (North Carolina) was selected as the Freshman of the Year with Duke's Pam Bustin named Coach of the Year.
No. 10 Syracuse, the five seed in this week's ACC Tournament, takes on fifth-ranked Virginia, which hosts the event this year and will be the four seed. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on ACC Network live from Virginia's Turf Field. Leah Secondo and Suzanne Bush have the call.
