
Syracuse Beats Charleston, Loses To Robert Morris At The Lowcountry Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Syracuse softball split its doubleheader on day one of the Lowcountry Classic, beating tournament hosts Charleston and losing to Robert Morris in the opener.
An Orange rally fell short in the 8-6 loss against Robert Morris, as Syracuse scored six unanswered runs against the Colonials. The Orange overcame a two-run deficit to secure a win against tournament hosts Charleston, 3-2.
Senior catcher Jude Padilla drove in runs across both games in the doubleheader, including the game-winning runs against Charleston. In the second game, Lindsey Hendrix orchestrated her best outing of the 2023 campaign, striking out eight batters and allowing two runs.
GAME ONE VS. ROBERT MORRIS:
After a scoreless first inning, Robert Morris found success at the plate in the second, tallying two runs on two hits. Infielder Anna Resnik drew a leadoff walk, followed by a RBI double from Alaina Koutsogiani. With two outs, Avery Winchell doubled Robert Morris' lead with a single, 2-0.
In the third inning, the Colonials found an offensive groove, scoring six runs on two hits. A walk from Logan Black set up a single from Resnik. Robert Morris loaded the bases with a Koutsogiani walk, scoring its third run on a fielding error and fourth run on a wild pitch. Jackie Pengel replaced Madison Knight in the middle of the third, as back-to-back walks would bring in two runs. The Colonials scoring run ended with a two-run RBI single from Meadow Sacadura, 8-0. Â
The Orange answered in their half of the third. The inning kicked-off with walks from Angel Jasso, Knight and a single from Ryan Starr. With the bases loaded, Rebecca Clyde drove in two runs with a single. In the following at-bat, Madelyn Lopez brought in Syracuse's third run of the game with a sacrifice fly, 8-3.
Syracuse held Robert Morris off the board for the rest game, staging a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, the Orange got their first base runner, as Clyde reached first base on an error. Lopez provided a second baserunner with a walk. Padilla cut into the Robert Morris lead, lining a single into right field, 8-4.
With two runners on, Tessa Galipeau cleared the bases with a single, trimming the Colonial advantage to two, 8-6. A single from Trinity Nichols and a Jasso walk loaded the bases. Geana Torres stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter for Starr but struck out to end the game.
Syracuse finished the game with six runs on eight hits and two errors. Jasso and Clyde logged two-hit performances against Robert Morris.
GAME TWO VS. CHARLESTON:
Charleston struck first, scoring two runs. The first Cougar run arrived in the bottom of the first, as Aniz Roman scored with a wild pitch. In the following inning, Charleston brought home the second run on a catcher's interference.
The Syracuse bats stepped up in the top of the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Lopez drove in the first Orange run, as Syracuse cut the Charleston lead to one, 1-2. In the following at-bat, Padilla lined a single into right field, driving in the go-ahead runs, 3-2.
Hendrix shut down the Cougars for the rest of her time in the circle, as the junior lefty logged a season-high eight strikeouts, while allowing two runs and four hits over six innings. Senior pitcher Kaia Oliver closed out the game in the seventh, securing the fourth win of the season and the seventh save of her career.
