Orange Challenge Cup on the Line Saturday

The 10th-ranked Syracuse Orange will race 8th-ranked Penn and Northeastern for the Orange Challenge Cup at the Doc Hosea Invitational on Saturday, April 1st on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. The 2023 Doc Hosea field for the includes the 10th-ranked Orange, Bucknell, Northeastern, 8th-ranked Penn and Villanova. The varsity eights for Syracuse, Penn and Northeastern will race for the Orange Challenge Cup, which is one of the oldest trophies in women's rowing dating back to 1977. The Doc Hosea Invitational was borne out of the Orange Challenge Cup in 2016. Racing at the Doc Hosea Invitational begins at 8:00 am with the second varsity 8.

Syracuse has won the Orange Challenge Cup 13 times, including the last four that the Orange Challenge Cup has been contested (races in 2020 and 2022 were cancelled). Northeastern has won the trophy 16 times, while Penn has taken home the trophy nine times.
This is the sixth year of the Doc Hosea Invitational and the fifth in a row to take place on the Cooper (the event was on pause in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19). The team with the highest overall point total is awarded the Doc Hosea Trophy. The event was created in memory of longtime U.S. National Rowing Team Doctor, Timothy "Doc" Hosea. Doc made himself available to anyone in rowing who asked for his help, from the National Team down to college, club and high school athletes.

'Cuse comes into the weekend on the heels of a sweep at the Ivy/Big Ten Double Duel this past weekend, seeing wins for the first, second, and third varsity 8s, as well as for the first and second varsity 4s against Radcliffe, Rutgers, and Iowa. The first varsity 8, stroked by graduate student Annika Maxson, had a dominating performance, beating Radcliffe and Rutgers by more than 10 seconds and Iowa by more than 30 seconds. The second varsity eight earned Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week for its three victories. The Orange won their first race finishing nine seconds ahead of Radcliffe and 13 seconds in front of Rutgers. In the second race, the Orange beat the Hawkeyes by nearly 40 seconds to remain undefeated on the day.
