Syracuse is the 2023 Doc Hosea Invitational champion! The 10th-ranked Orange won three races, including the varsity eight Orange Challenge Cup, and had one second place and two third place finishes on Saturday on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J. Syracuse won the sixth Doc Hosea Invitational title by two points over 8th-ranked Penn. Northeastern finished third, while Bucknell was fourth and Villanova placed fifth.
The 'Cuse varsity eight beat Penn and Northeastern to bring home the Orange Challenge Cup for the fifth time in a row. The Orange edged Penn by .74 seconds and Northeastern by 14.77 seconds to win the Orange Challenge Cup, which is one of the oldest trophies in women's rowing dating back to 1977. Senior Hannah Murphy coxswained the boat that included stroke Annika Maxson, Alena Criss, Izabela Krakic, Kamile Kralikaite, Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, India Aikens, Martyna Kazlauskaite and Aphrodite Gioulekas. Syracuse finished in 6:20.07 followed by Penn (6:20.81), Northeastern (6:44.87), Bucknell (6:55.50) and Villanova (6:55.88). It is the 14th Orange Challenge Cup victory for Syracuse. Northeastern has won the trophy 16 times, while Penn has taken home the trophy nine times.
Both of Syracuse's fours won their races. The varsity four, including coxswain Louise Rath, stroke Junior Ognovich, Haley Uliasz, Mae Sweeney and Alice McNeil, won its race, beating Penn, Northeastern and Bucknell, and the 'second varsity four, that was coxswained by April Serrano and included stroke Elizabeth Vogt, Kaitlyn Dennis, Sarah Haney and Madison D'Ambra, took first in its race, ahead of Penn, Bucknell and Northeastern.
Syracuse's second varsity eight finished second (6:41.48) to Penn (6:35.93), while Northeastern (6:50.70) was third, Bucknell (7:04.79) placed fourth and Villanova (7:07.35) was fifth. Sophomore Caileigh Grimes coxswained the boat with stroke Zoe Acosta, Lena Radke, Heather Stafford, Emmie Frederico, Olivia Schaertl, Lauren Coop, Lea Dahn and Katharine Ryan.
The 'Cuse third and fourth varsity eights took third in their races. Freshman Isabella DeSantis coxswained the 3V8 that included stroke Rebecca Farrell, Emma Cloud, Taylor Lewandowski, Maddi Segarnick, Nora Radke, Charlotte Ebel, Grace Loveridge and Izzy Blackburn. The fourth varsity eight lineup included coxswain Isabelle Sareen, stroke Margaux Gryska, Lea Guttormson, Sarah Csobaji, Maddie Niedbalski, Hannah Fagioli, Olyma Desarmes, Abigail Rockwood and Cassandra Dasco.
The Doc Hosea Invitational was borne out of the Orange Challenge Cup in 2016, created in memory of longtime U.S. National Rowing Team Doctor, Timothy "Doc" Hosea. Doc made himself available to anyone in rowing who asked for his help, from the National Team down to college, club and high school athletes.
Next weekend the Orange will race at the Saratoga Invitational against 3rd-ranked Yale and Cornell on April 8th at Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
