Syracuse, UAlbany Split Doubleheader

ALBANY, N.Y. – Syracuse softball and UAlbany split a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at UAlbany Field. The Great Danes took game one, 5-0, behind a strong pitching performance from starting pitcher Wendi Hammond.Â
Syracuse erased a three-run deficit in the sixth inning in game two, winning 5-4 in extra innings.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
The hosts struck first, as the Great Danes (13-13, 4-3 America East) scored a run in the second frame. With runners on first and third, UAlbany called a double steal, allowing infielder Deanna Grahek to steal home, 1-0.
UAlbany added to its lead in the fifth inning. With one out, Grahek drew a walk, putting a runner on base for Hammond. Hammond sent a ball to deep left center, scoring Grahek on an RBI double, 2-0. After a walk from pinch hitter Sierra Fretz, infielder Jordan Nastos found a gap in the infield for an RBI single, 3-0.Â
The Orange (13-19-1, 3-10-1 Atlantic Coast)Â finished with five hits and no fielding errors for the 15th time this season. Knight threw for 4.2 innings, tying her career-high in strikeouts with seven while surrendering three runs on three hits. In her past 18 innings of work, Knight has 21 strikeouts.Â
Five different Orange batters finished game one with a hit, as Hammond threw a complete game shutout with one strikeout.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
After three scoreless innings, the Orange scored first in the fourth inning. Infielder Tessa Galipeau worked a leadoff walk and was replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Ryan Gallegos. Outfielder Angel Jasso crushed a ball to deep left for an RBI-double, bringing home Syracuse's first run of the day, 1-0.Â
The Great Danes took the lead with a four-run fifth inning. Grahek opened the frame with a leadoff double, allowing infielder Chloe Lewis to tie the game with a RBI-single, 1-1. Back-to-back singles loaded the bases for outfielder Caitlyn Frederick, who scored the go-ahead run by forcing a fielding error, 2-1. A single from Nastos scored the third run, while a fielder's choice logged the last run of the inning, 4-1.Â
Syracuse responded immediately, tying the game in the sixth inning. With Jasso on second, catcher Laila Alves drove a ball to deep center for an RBI-triple, cutting the UAlbany advantage, 4-2. With a runner on third, designated player Geana Torres drove a ball to deep center for a two-run home run, tying the game at four each. The clutch hit was Torres' first home run since 2021.Â
For the second time this season, a game went to extra innings. The Orange scored the go-ahead run, as Jasso knocked a ground ball up the first base line, scoring Breen, 5-4.Â
