4/15/2023 4:51:00 PM | Softball
An Orange rally fell short in game one, as North Carolina won the series opener, 7-5.Â
Late game heroics lifted Syracuse to a 5-4 win in game two, tying the series at one. A two-out, three-run home run from freshman pitcher Madison Knight secured Syracuse's win in game two. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
After a scoreless first frame, Syracuse (14-20-1, 4-11-1 Atlantic Coast) took an early lead in the second inning. Knight roped a single for the first Orange hit of the game. 'Cuse gained another base runner, as catcher Laila Alves reached safely on an error. Infielder Rebecca Clyde drove a double to the opposite field, scoring a run, 1-0.
The hosts jumped into the lead in their half of the second inning, scoring four runs. With two runners on and one out, outfielder Carsyn Snead brought home two runs with an RBI-single, 2-1. In the next at-bat, infielder Alex Brown scored Snead with a single, 3-1. A double from Abby Settlemyre drove in the final run of the inning, 4-1.Â
The North Carolina (18-25, 7-9) offense kept rolling, adding two more runs in the third. A lead off single from infielder Skyler Brooks set up an RBI double from Destiny Middleton, 5-1. With one out, Isabela Emerling executed a sacrifice bunt to score another run, 6-1.
In the fifth inning, the Tar Heels scored their seventh run of the game on a sacrifice fly from pitcher Carlie Myrlte.
A big sixth inning saw Syracuse reduce North Carolina's advantage to two runs. Singles from infielder Kelly Breen and outfielder Angel Jasso put two runners on for Alves. The sophomore roped a double off the wall, bringing in both runs, 7-3. In the next at-bat, outfielder Taylor Posner crushed a ball past the left field wall for her second home run of the year, 7-5.
Syracuse finished with five runs on six hits. Lindsey Hendrix went four innings, striking out two batters while allowing six runs on seven hits.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
The Orange scored first in game two, taking a lead in the first inning. Freshman outfielder Madelyn Lopez drew a walk, followed by a double from infielder Tessa Galipeau, putting runners on second and third for Breen. The sophomore grounded out to second base, scoring the opening run, 1-0.
After a scoreless second, the Tar Heels logged four runs in the third inning to take the lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Settlemyre drove a ball to deep center field for an RBI double, 1-1. North Carolina pulled ahead with a sacrifice fly from infielder Lexi Godwin, 2-1. Middleton drove in the final two runs of the inning with a single, 4-1.Â
The back and forth scoring continued, as the Orange scored in the fourth inning. Alves found more success at the plate, lining a double. Outfielder Gabby Lantier subbed in as a pinch runner, advancing to third on the next at-bat. Laniter scored on a passed ball, 4-2.
In the top of the seventh, Syracuse's heart of the lineup manufactured late game magic to take the lead. With one out, Galipeau got on base with a single. Jasso reached safely with two outs on a fielder's choice, putting runners on first and third for Knight. The reigning ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week sent a shot to deep left for a go-ahead three-run home run, 5-4.
Syracuse ended with five runs on eight hits in the victory. For the first time this season, the Orange won a game when trailing after six innings.Â
