Syracuse (14-21-1, 4-12-1 ACC) was held scoreless and limited to two hits in a 6-0 loss at North Carolina (19-25, 8-9 ACC) on Sunday. The game was called after six innings because of a pre--determined time limit placed on the contest.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
North Carolina's Lilli Backus gave up a first-inning single to Syracuse's Madelyn Lopez but limited the Orange to only one more hit the rest of the way in a complete-game shutout. She faced two batters oer the minimum and struck out five while improving her record to 11-12.
AN EARLY 'CUSE THREAT
The Orange attempted to get on the board early. Lopez opened the contest with a single but Backus quickly shut down the threat by retiring the next three Syracuse batters.Â
HEELS CROSS THE PLATE FIRST
Kiesten Licea put North Carolina on the board first, clubbing a home run in the first at bat of the second inning. Syracuse starter Lindsey Hendrix limited the damage by taking care of three straight Tar Heel batters, including a strike out of Carlie Myrtle to end the frame.
Hendrix pitched out of trouble in the third inning, as well. North Carolina's Carsyn Snead reached on a one-out single and advanced on a passed ball. Hendrix then fanned Alex Brown and induced Bri Stubbs into a pop-up in foul territory.
HOSTS EXTEND MARGIN IN THE FOURTH
North Carolina took advantage of a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning to push its lead to 2-0. The Orange brought Madison Knight into the contest and she managed to end the inning by setting down both batters. The Tar Heels crossed the plate on the first out, a line drive by Isabela Emerling that Lopez handled.
ONE LAST SYRACUSE CHANCE
Knight began the fifth inning with a double to left field. Pinch-runner Kate Dorazio entered the game and advanced to third on Taylor Posner's sacrifice bunt. It was as far as Dorzio would get as Backus retired the next two hitters.
North Carolina added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to close out the contest.
NEXT UP FOR THE ORANGE
Syracuse plays a twinbill at Binghamton on Wednesday, April 19. The first game is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
