Orange Lose to Louisville, 4-3
4/16/2023 2:53:00 PM | Tennis
A shorthanded No. 36 Syracuse tennis squad faltered on the road against Louisville, losing to the Cardinals in a tightly contested duel, 4-3. The loss puts an end to the regular season for the Orange (11-9, 4-9 ACC) who will begin postseason play in the ACC Tournament this week.
Senior standout Zeynep Erman was sidelined for the duration of the match against Louisville (9-13, 1-11 ACC), forcing the Orange to forfeit the third doubles match and the sixth singles flight. Syracuse still fought hard, giving Louisville all it could handle thanks to a 7-5 comeback victory from Polina Kozyreva/Miyuka Kimoto against Jamilah Snells/Xin Cici (UL). Viktoriya Kanapatskaya/Shiori Ito battled against Andrea Di Palma/Rhea Verma (UL), but ceded the doubles point to the Cardinals with a 7-5 loss.
Needing to win four out of the five singles matches to take the duel, Kozyreva and Fonte got the Orange off to a hot start with wins against Tyra Richardson (6-0, 6-2) and Xin (6-0, 6-3), respectively. Ito gave Syracuse its first and only lead of the day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory versus Sasha Gorchanyuk. After Di Palma defeated Kanapatskaya, it fell on Kimoto to take down Verma to decide the duel.
Kimoto took the first set, 6-4 but Verma forced a third with her ensuing 6-3 triumph. In the final set, the Louisville graduate student took control from the get-go, handing Kimoto a 6-0 loss and claiming the duel for the home team.
Syracuse tennis begins postseason play this week as it kicks off the ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C. on Wednesday, April 19. Exact times and opponents will be announced later this evening by the ACC.
