Orange Take Second at Lake Wheeler Invitational

The ninth-ranked Orange varsity eight beat eighth-ranked Penn and 14th ranked Duke on Saturday to complete the sweep of all three races at the 2023 Lake Wheeler Invitational in Raleigh, N.C. Coxswain Hannah Murphy guided the boat that included stroke Annika Maxson, Alena Criss, Izabela Krakic, Kamile Kralikaite, Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, India Aikens, Martyna Kazlauskaite and bow Emmie Frederico, completed the Lake Wheeler sweep finishing in 6:27.481, two seconds ahead of second-place Penn and the rest of the field. The varsity eight also won both races on Friday.

Syracuse finished second in the Pocock Cup standings, scoring 86 points, just behind first-place Duke (88 pts.) and ahead of Penn (83). The 18-team field also featured 19th-ranked Iowa, University of Alabama, Boston University, Clemson and Tennessee, all of which are among the schools receiving votes in this week's CRCA Pocock National Poll, Boston College, Central Florida, Georgetown, Kansas, Louisville, Miami, Navy, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Washington State.

The second varsity eight, which included coxswain Louise Rath, stroke Aphrodite Gioulekas, Olivia Schaertl, Lena Radke, Lea Dahn, Lauren Coop, Zoe Acosta, Haley Uliasz and bow Heather Stafford, finished third in its race in 6:54.511, crossing the finish line after Penn (6:45.275) and Duke (6:49.079) and ahead of Boston University, Louisville and Kansas.

The varsity four, including coxswain Caileigh Grimes, stroke Junior Ognovich, Kaitlyn Dennis, Mae Sweeney and bow Alice McNeill, finished second in 7:44.355, five seconds behind Duke. The boat earned two first-place finishes on Saturday.

The second varsity four took second in its final race, crossing the finish line in 7:52.685. Coxswain April Serrano guided the boat that included stroke Elizabeth Vogt, Madison D'Ambra, Sarah Haney and bow Katharine Ryan, had a pair of first place finishes on the first day of the regatta.

Syracuse's third varsity four, including coxswain Isabelle Sareen, stroke Hannah Fagioli, Cassandra Dasco, Abigail Rockwood and bow Olyma Desarmes, placed sixth in the 2V4 heat on Saturday.

The Orange third varsity eight came in second, crossing the finish line in 7:11.816, behind Duke (7:06.328) and in front of Kansas, Penn and Louisville. Coxswain Isabella DeSantis guided stroke Margaux Gryska, Emma Cloud, Taylor Lewandowski, Charlotte Ebel, Nora Radke, Rebecca Farrell, Grace Loveridge and bow Maddi Segarnick had two first place finishes on Friday.
