
Syracuse Takes Series Finale Against Lafayette

EASTON, PA. - Syracuse softball completed the sweep of Lafayette, winning Sunday afternoon's series finale, 11-1. The Orange tallied 33 runs across the three games, the most in a series this season. 'Cuse batters combined for a .438 batting average and a .657 slugging percentage in the three-game series against the Leopards.
Freshman pitcher Madison Knight threw her fifth complete game of the season, striking out a career-high 10 batters while allowing one run on five hits. In her two starts against Lafayette, Knight posted a 1.62 earned run average and 16 strikeouts over 13 inning of work.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After three scoreless innings, Syracuse (18-22-1, 4-12-1 Atlantic Coast) scored the first run in the fourth inning. Singles from infielder Kelly Breen and catcher Laila Alves put runners on the corner for designated player Jackie Pengel. With two outs, Pengel pushed a ball down the third base line, scoring the first run, 1-0. The hit represented the first of Pengel's career and her first RBI as well.
The Orange offense kept clicking, producing four runs in the fifth frame. Outfielder Angie Ramos got the action started, hitting a single. After a sacrifice bunt from infielder Ryan Starr moved Ramos to scoring position, infielder Tessa Galipeau doubled Syracuse's lead with a single. Breen kept the train rolling, doubling to score Galipeau for the third run. Pinch hitter Peyton Schemmer recorded Syracuse's third straight hit, bringing in the fourth run of the game. Knight brought home the final run of the inning with a double, 5-0.
Lafayette (6-32-1, 2-10 Patriot League) responded in the fifth inning with its first run. After a single from outfielder Paige Sandidge, catcher Kaya Ciccone-Cozart singled to score Sandidge, 5-1.Â
Syracuse added to the lead in the seventh inning, recording a series-high six runs. With two runners on base, Knight sent an extra base hit to center field, scoring two runs, 7-1. A double from Alves logged the eighth Orange run of the game. Pengel found a gap in shallow right field, sending Alves home, 9-1. A two-run home run from outfielder Taylor Posner ended the scoring run, 11-1.Â
The Orange finished with 11 runs on 17 hits, a single-game high for this season. Nine different Syracuse batters recorded at least one hit, six of them being multi-hit performances. Knight, Posner and Pengel all drove in multiple runs.Â
UP NEXT:
Syracuse concludes its road schedule with a trip to Cornell for a doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 26. Game one in Ithaca will begin at 3 p.m., while game two is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
