SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Propelled by 10 shutout innings from freshman pitcher Madison Knight, Syracuse softball took two games in Friday's doubleheader to earn a vital Atlantic Coast Conference series win against Virginia.Â
The Orange offense led the way in the game one 8-3 victory. Junior outfielder Angel Jasso logged a multi-hit and multi-RBI performance to start the series.Â
Knight was the star of the show in game two, using her bat and arm to lead the 4-0 win. The freshman from Baltimore, Maryland hit a solo home run, while striking out four batters in her second straight complete game shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
After two scoreless frames, Syracuse (22-22-1, 6-12-1 ACC)Â started the scoring with a bang. With a full count, infielder Rebecca Clyde crushed a ball to deep center field for a no-doubt solo home run, providing the Orange an early lead, 1-0.Â
'Cuse kept pushing in the third inning, as infielder Ryan Starr hustled out an infield single and Tessa Galipeau worked a walk, putting two on for outfielder Madleyn Lopez. Lopez hit a ground ball to second base, forcing a throwing error that scored two runs, 3-0. Infielder Kelly Breen kept the rally alive, bringing in Jasso and Lopez with a single, 5-0. Outfielder Taylor Posner grounded out to second base, scoring the sixth and final run of the inning.
Virginia (29-20, 8-15)Â responded immediately, adding three runs in its half of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, senior infielder Gabby Baylog drew a walk to score a run, 6-1. In the next at-bat, junior catcher Leah Boggs hit a RBI-single to trim the Syracuse lead to three, 6-3.Â
In the bottom of the sixth, Syracuse scored two more runs to extend its lead to five. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Angelton, Texas native snuck a ball past third base and shortstop, driving in two runs, 8-3.
Syracuse finished with eight runs on eight hits, not committing an error for the 20th time this season. Junior left-handed pitcher Lindsey Hendrix got the start in the circle, recording three strikeouts while allowing three runs on four hits in four innings of work. Knight pitched three scoreless relief innings, striking out one batter.Â
