Orange 2V4 Wins Gold at Eastern Sprints
4/30/2023 5:57:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Syracuse's second varsity four won a gold medal and four others earned silver medals at the 2023 Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. on Sunday. The 2V4 captured the gold by winning the grand final race, finishing ahead of Brown, Columbia, Radcliffe, Rutgers and Boston University. The Orange varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and third varsity eight all finished second in their respective grand finals to earn silver medals.
"The 2V4 had an awesome race," said head coach Luke McGee. "They rowed a real commanding and mature race. They commanded the middle 1,000 meters. It was great performance."
In addition to 10th-ranked Syracuse, the Eastern Sprints field featured four top-20 teams, including fifth-ranked Brown, 15th-ranked Radcliffe, 18th-ranked Rutgers, and 20th-ranked Columbia.
The Orange 2V4, which was coxswained by April Serrano and included stroke Elizabeth Vogt, Madison D'Ambra, Sarah Haney and bow Lauren Coop, swept the racing for the day. In the heats, the Orange beat Rutgers, Boston University, Rhode Island, Northeastern, Temple and Colgate.
"We did some re-shuffling of some boats this week and the whole team did a good job keeping their heads about them," McGee said. "The second varsity eight and the fours had new lineups and performed really well."
Syracuse's varsity eight fought Brown to the finish, coming within 1.38 seconds of the Bears. The Orange jumped out to an early four-seat lead in the first 500 before Brown pushed to get level in the second 500 meters. Brown made a move at the midway point to gain four seats in the third 500 and then Syracuse fought to get within two to three seats at the finish line.
"That race was a really good experience for the varsity eight heading into ACCs," McGee said. "They know there are a couple of things they could have done differently in the race, but we are happy with the effort."
After Brown extended its lead to three seats in the third 500, the Orange came back within one seat before the finish line. The V8, which included coxswain Hannah Murphy, stroke Annika Maxson, Alena Criss, Izabela Krakic, Kamile Kralikaite, Ellie-Kate Hutchinson, India Aikens, Martyna Kazlauskaite and bow Emmie Frederico, won its heat to advance to the grand final.
After winning its morning heat, the second varsity eight took second in its grand final behind Brown and ahead of Radcliffe, Rutgers, Columbia and Boston University. Coxswain Louise Rath guided the boat that included stroke Junior Ognovich, Aphrodite Gioulekas, Olivia Schaertl, Lena Radke, Heather Stafford, Haley Uliasz, Zoe Acosta and bow Kaitlyn Dennis.
The 'Cuse varsity four, including coxswain Caileigh Grimes, stroke Alice McNeill, Katharine Ryan, Lea Dahn and bow Mae Sweeney, placed second in the grand final behind Brown and in front of Radcliffe, Rutgers, Columbia and Northeastern. The Orange advanced to the grand final after winning their heat by 18 seconds in front of second-place Northeastern.
Coxswain Isabella DeSantis guided the third varsity eight that included stroke Margaux Gryska, Emma Cloud, Taylor Lewandowski, Charlotte Ebel, Nora Radke, Rebecca Farrell, Grace Loveridge and bow Maddi Segarnick to a second-place finish in the grand final. The Orange finished behind Brown and ahead of Northeastern, Rutgers, Columbia and Michigan State.
Syracuse's third varsity four, which was coxswained by Isabelle Sareen and included stroke Hannah Fagioli, Cassandra Dasco, Abigail Rockwood and bow Olyma Desarmes, placed sixth in its grand final.
"We are really looking forward to working with each of the boats as we prepare for the ACCs," McGee said. "The team is in a really good spot as far as energy and mindset. Every point is going to matter at the conference championship."
