The fourth-ranked Syracuse men's rowing team completed its opening weekend of the 2023 season against No. 1 California at Redwood Shores in Redwood City, Calif.Â
Â
The Varsity Eight (V8+) lost to Cal by 5.9 seconds finishing the 2,000 meter course in 5:40.7 behind the Bears who crossed in 5:34.8. The Second Varsity Eight (2V8+) lost by 0.7 seconds to Cal who finished in 5:41.4 while the Orange clocked in at 5:42.1.
"We were very excited to race No. 1 in the country," Arnaud Buard (V8+, 6-seat) said. "It was a bit under what we did yesterday. It was a really great race. We know we have a lot of things to improve on so we are excited to get home and work on it."
"We didn't really know what we were getting into until about 1,000 meters in when Cal's 2V went dead silent," team captain Finn Conlon (2V8+, bow seat) said. "We're feeling pretty good about the whole thing. We are close, maybe can start our sprint a little bit earlier next time but we are looking forward to the next time we meet."Â
The Orange return to Central New York to face #10 Cornell and #17 U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday, April 15 in Ithaca, N.Y., for the Goes Trophy Race.Â
