All five Orange boats finish in the top six
WORCESTER, MA - For the first time in 45 years, the Syracuse men's rowing team reached the podium at Eastern Sprints with a third-place finish in the Varsity Eight Grand Final Sunday evening on Lake Quinsigamond.
The Second Varsity Eight (2V8) finished fourth in the Grand Final while the third (3V8) and fourth (4V8) varsity eights placed sixth. The Varsity Four (V4) kicked things for the Orange in the finals with a first-place finish in a mixed final between the heavyweights and the lightweight fours.
"It was a goal we set in the beginning of the year, to have all four eights in the Grand Finals," Syracuse Head Coach Dave Reischman said. "I think it was a big deal for the team and it set the right tempo. I think even having the V4 coming down, even as an exhibition, set the tone for the day. Having all our boats do so well was awesome."
In the final race of the day, the Orange held off a late Harvard surge in the final 500 meters to earn third behind Yale (5:23.710) and Princeton (5:25.057). The Orange, stroked by senior Arnaud Buard, bested Harvard by 0.89 seconds to earn the final spot on the podium. Dartmouth (+5.048) and Brown (+5.435) rounded out the top-six.
"It's been a long time coming," Reischman said of the Varsity Eight result. "It's been a lot of ups and downs over the years and this group kind of kept the faith. I think it is a testament of who these guys are, that they took a race that was good in the morning but maybe not quite what they wanted, and they were able to turn that into a better race in the afternoon.
If there is one superpower that this group has, it's the ability to make a change and execute on race day. I think that was just a good representation of who they are as a crew. To be in the mix of a big-time boat race like that at the 1000-meter mark and to respond like they did I thought it was awesome."
In the 2V8 Grand Final, Harvard crossed the finish first in 5:33.639 ahead of Princeton (+ 2.140) and Brown (3.130) who placed second and third, respectively. The Orange, stroked by Declan Fry, clocked in at 5:38.689 for fourth place ahead of Yale (5th) by 0.335 seconds. Dartmouth finished sixth, 5.738 seconds behind first-place Harvard.
The Syracuse 3V8 earned a sixth-place finish in the Grand Final. Stroked by Anders Erlandsen, the Orange crossed the finish in 5:46.670 (+9.358). Yale earned the win with a time of 5:37.312 ahead of Brown (+2.242), Dartmouth (+4.203), Harvard (+5.070) and Princeton (+9.128).
The 4V8, stroked by Alex Dawallu, also finished sixth in the Grand Final, finishing in 5:48.983 (+9.977). Harvard won the third varsity eight with a time of 5:39.006 while Dartmouth was second (+4.900) and Yale was third (6.570). Princeton and Brown rounded out the top five.
The Varsity Four set the tone for the afternoon with a first-place finish in a mixed Grand Final with Harvard's varsity four and lightweight crews from Penn and Harvard. The Orange finished the 2000-meter course in 6:32.166.
Next up for the Orange is the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship Regatta at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J., June 2-4.
