Hegland Named USTFCCCA Regional Assistant of the Year

After mentoring a First Team All-American in the hurdles for the ninth time in his career this outdoor season, Dave Hegland has been named USTFCCCA Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Hegland, the Orange's Associate Head Coach, oversees Syracuse's sprints, hurdles and jumps programs at 'Cuse. He came to 'Cuse in 2004 as a graduate assistant and has been with the team since.
His latest protegee, Jaheem Hayles, finished third at last week's NCAA Championships in the 110-meter hurdles. He set a school-record time of 13.28 seconds in the final to earn bronze. It's the seventh time in the last 11 seasons that a Hegland coached hurdler has reached the NCAA Championship.
The nationals performance comes on the heels of a strong conference meet. Hegland coached four All-ACC performers across the 110 and 400-meter hurdles, and the Orange boasted five of the top-10 spots in the 110-meter hurdles at the meet. Hayles was the top performer there as well, taking third. However, he topped both runners who bested him at the NCAA Championships just four weeks later.
As a team this season, both the Orange men and women finished inside the top-20 of the USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings. One of 11 schools that scored at every NCAA Championship, and one-of-three private institutions, 'Cuse had its best finish in the standings in five years.
Hegland is now a four-time winner of this award.
