
Orange Begin IRA National Championship Strong

West Windsor, N.J. – The Syracuse men's rowing team had a strong start on the first day of the IRA National Championship on Mercer Lake at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, N.J. Due to high temperatures, the IRA canceled the afternoon racing after the conclusion of the 2V8 repechages which included the 3V8 repechages and the Varsity Four semifinals. The Orange now turn the page to the semifinals for the eights while the Varsity Four prepares for the C Final on Saturday morning.
Syracuse's Varsity 8 advanced straight to the semifinals with a second-place finish in Heat 4. The Orange crossed the finish in 5:40.980, 3.544 seconds behind winner Washington (5:37.436) and ahead of Penn (5:47.846) by open water. The Varsity 8 is in Semifinal B at 8:02 am and will face Stanford, Brown, Yale, Princeton, and Cornell.
The 2V8 also finished second in its respective heat crossing the finish in 5:47.312, 3.152 seconds behind winner Harvard (5:44.160) and ahead of Boston University (5:54.444). The 2V8 will race in Semifinal A at 8:10 am and will line up with Cornell, Yale, California, Brown and Penn.
The 3V8 placed third in Heat 2 crossing the finish in 5:51.963, 2.848 seconds behind winner Yale and 1.643 behind second-place Dartmouth. The Orange were slated to race in the afternoon repechage but due to the weather Syracuse will advance to Semifinal 1 at 8:26 a.m. Also in Semifinal A is Penn, Dartmouth, Harvard, Brown and Northeastern.
The top three teams in each semifinal advance to the Grand Final and the remaining crews will race in Sunday's Petite Final.
The Varsity 4 placed 14th in the time trial (5:51.963) and due to the cancelation of the afternoon semifinals, will advance straight to the C Final at 10:10 a.m. Syracuse will race Princeton, Oklahoma City, Colgate, Boston U and Drexel.
