Five Orange Named All-America, Eight Earn Scholar Athlete Recognition
Four Syracuse University oarsmen and senior coxswain Bricen Nygaard were named Empacher/IRCA All-American this week while eight Orange earned Empacher/IRCA Coaches Scholar Athlete accolades.
Arnaud Buard and Nicholas Kohl were First Team All-Americans while Nygaard and Benjamin Dukes earned Second Team honors. Joe Willis picked up an Honorable Mention for the first time in his Syracuse career.
Buard stroked the Orange Varsity Eight that earned fifth at the IRA National Championship for the second-straight season. Buard, the Soladay Award Winner at Syracuse University, helped guide the Orange to its first medal at Eastern Sprints in over 40 years when Syracuse placed third in the Grand Final. Buard's leadership helped the Orange to a 7-1 record in the regular season.
Kohl, who was selected as this year's Godfrey Award winner by his teammates, sat six-seat in the Varsity Eight. The Godfrey Award is voted on by the Orange squad annually and awarded to a teammate who best encompasses what it means to be a Syracuse Oarsmen. Kohl was in the Varsity Eight that won the Head of the Charles, lost just one regular season race to eventual national champion California, and claimed all four of its cup races this spring.
Dukes was seven-seat in the Varsity Eight and helped the Orange to its third-straight top five finish at the IRA Championship. He was a mainstay in the Varsity Eight that won the Goes Trophy, Conlan Cup, Stagg Trophy and Packard Cup this season – the first cup sweep for Syracuse since 2006.
Nygaard, a second team honoree, was the coxswain of the Varsity Eight this season. He steered the Orange to a fifth-place finish in the Grand Final of the IRA Championship and a 7-1 regular-season record with wins over #12 Wisconsin, #6 Northeastern, #21 Navy, #12 Cornell, #13 Boston University, #6 Dartmouth and #16 Georgetown.
Willis earned All-America honorable mention honors after moving to the Varsity Eight this spring. As the five-seat of the V8+, Willis helped guide the Orange to its first medal at the Eastern Sprints in 40 years and a fifth-place finish at the IRA National Championship on June 4.
In addition to the All-America honorees, the IRCA announced this year's Empacher/IRCA Scholar Athletes. Syracuse had eight student-athletes earn Scholar Athlete recognition. Buard and Kohl were joined by Finn Conlon, Reilly Eagan, Jack Gorman, Malakai Leon, Emory Sammons and Connor Toommey as IRCA Scholar Athletes.
Syracuse traveled two crews across the pond and will race an eight (Temple Challenge Cup) and a straight four (Visitors Challenge Cup) at the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta at Henley-on-Thames next week.
