Syracuse coxswain Hannah Murphy is the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Orange rower to ever earn that distinction. A 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection, Murphy is one of 33 Syracuse rowers on the 2023 ACC All-Academic Team. Â Three Orange rowers, Louise Rath (broadcast and digital journalism), Lea Dahn (international relations) and Murphy (bioengineering) earned the honor for the third time in their career. Student-athletes must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average and have at least a 3.0 in the most recent semester, and have played in 50% of a team's contests to be considered for the ACC All-Academic Team.
Â
Seven student-athletes are on the ACC All-Academic Team for the second time, including India Aikens (physics), Madison D'Ambra (communication and rhetorical studies), Aphrodite Gioulekas (fashion design), Caileigh Grimes (graphic design), Katharine Ryan (public administration Master's degree and biology, geography, and environment, sustainability & policy and public affairs undergraduate), Heather Stafford (biology) and Haley Uliasz (sport management).
First-time 'Cuse honorees are Zoe Acosta (forensic science), Emma Cloud (civil engineering), Lauren Coop (applied data analytics), Alena Criss (psychology), Casandra Dasco (dual major in finance and public relations), Nora Devine (Arts & Sciences, undeclared), Charlotte Ebel (dual major in women and gender studies and public relations), Hannah Fagioli (forensic science), Rebecca Farrell (dual major in applied mathematics and neuroscience), Sarah Haney (entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises), Izabela Krakic (international relations), Kamile Kralikaite (international relations), Grave Loveridge (public health), Annika Maxson (international relations), Junior Ognovich (communication and rhetorical studies), Lena Radke (biology), Nora Radke (biology), Isabella Sareen (advertising), Olivia Schaertl (forensic science), Mae Sweeney (communication and rhetorical studies) and Elizabeth Vogt (sport management).
Â
Murphy coxswained the varsity eight to the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference championship. It was the first varsity eight ACC title in program history.
Â
A native of Buffalo, Murphy earned 2023 All-ACC Second Team honors, marking her second all-league honor in her Orange career. At the NCAA Championship, the Orange varsity eight's eighth-place finish is the second-best result in program history, and the highest finish in the current format of the national championship regatta. The 2001 varsity eight placed sixth as an at-large qualifier.
Â
Murphy is a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete and a two-time All-ACC Academic Team selection. The four-year member of the Orange rowing Leadership Council has earned ACC Academic Honor Roll selection every year at Syracuse. For her senior capstone design project, Murphy studied Vascular Access for Hemodialysis. She has also done research on fluid mechanics of disease transmission and finger physiology.
