6/30/2023 2:51:00 PM | Men's Rowing
For the first time in school history, Syracuse men's rowing has a crew in the semifinals of the Temple Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. The eight, coxed by senior Bricen Nygaard and stroked by Declan Fry, defeated Nereus 'A' from the Netherlands on the Thames River in Henley-on-Thames, England Friday evening.
The Orange and Nereus were side-by-side for the first 200 meters on the 2,112-meter course. 'Cuse made a move to gain nearly a length on the Dutch crew, a lead they would not give up as they won by 3 and 3/4ths length.
The win advances Syracuse to the semifinals of the Temple Challenge Cup, marking the first semifinal appearance for any Orange crew at Henley in over 40 years.Â
Syracuse's eight will race Oxford-Brookes 'B' in the semis. The race is scheduled for 2:50 pm (UK) Saturday (9:50 am ET).Â
In the Visitors' Challenge Cup, Syracuse lost to Leander Club in the quarterfinals early Friday night. Leander led most of the race, but Syracuse closed in through the final 200 meters and made contact by the finish to lose by 3/4ths of a length.
"Racing at Henley was a lot of fun and a new challenge for us, passing from the eight to the four," said Nicholas Kohl. "We were a bit unlucky with the draw and found a good crew on the second day, but all of us worked and improved the boat every day. It was one of the best way to end my career with Syracuse."
"It was a tough transition from the eight to the four but we were able to improve and take the best of each row," stroke seat Arnaud Buard said. "Leander was a tough crew due to their experience and we are happy to have given them such a fight! We had a lot of fun during this trip."Â
The Syracuse four's run comes to an end at Henley as does the collegiate careers for three seniors in the crew, Arnaud Buard, Benjamin Dukes and Nicholas Kohl.
