Syracuse Finishes 8th Overall in Ten Eyck Trophy Standings
West Windsor, N.J. – For the second-straight year the Syracuse Varsity 8 earned a fifth-place finish in the Grand Final at the IRA National Championship at Mercer Lake. The team finished eighth in the Ten Eyck Trophy standings which is awarded to the team with the most combined team points at the IRA Championship.
"I thought the effort was there across the board," Syracuse Head Coach Dave Reischman said. "I know we had a couple of crews in the last day that felt they were a little off in their execution, but the effort was there across the board. It was a great season, the guys won a lot of boat races. I think they had a lot of people in their corner along the way and I am pretty pleased with how things ended up."
The Varsity 8 finished 5th in Sunday's Grand Final, marking the third-straight top-5 finish for the Orange. California defended its title crossing the finish in 5:31.716. Washington (5:32.960) placed second while Princeton earned bronze finishing in 5:34.882. Yale edged the Orange (5:36.954) by 1.218 seconds for fourth and 'Cuse had open water on Northeastern who finished sixth.
"It's been a special group to work with throughout the year," Reischman said of the Varsity 8. "The last thing I told them before they launched was 'no regrets' and they got off the water and they said that was our A game and it was the best we had.
People have been commenting all year long how competitive men's collegiate rowing is across the board. The level keeps getting higher and higher. We are doing our best to match it with everything we've got. I thought the guys this year measured up well to the other top programs."
The Second Varsity Eight (2V8+) finished third in the Petite Final marking the second-straight season the Orange placed top-10. Princeton won the Petite Final in 5:45.110 while Boston University was second in 5:45.60. Syracuse (5:48.690) was in third beating Cornell (5:50.630), Pennsylvania (5:52.500) and Northeastern (5:54.740).
The Third Varsity Eight (3V8+) earned second in the Petite Final 2.250 seconds behind Princeton (5:51.680). Penn finished third in 5:56.060 while Boston U (5:59.820), Navy (6:03.270) and Northeastern (6:02.730) rounded out the order of finish.
California won the Ten Eyck Trophy while Washington finished second and Yale was third overall.
Ten seniors will move on from their time as Syracuse Oarsmen but will leave behind a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.
"I think their legacy is just leadership," Reischman said. "Talk about a group of guys that have been through a lot together starting with COVID their freshman year, the partial year their sophomore year, and just a hunger to get better each, and every, year. They were at their best starting with the Head of the Charles win at the start of the fall. I don't know that this group had a bad race and that is senior driven. That's the seniors setting the standard and not only encouraging but demanding that the rest of the group live up to the standard."
Syracuse will head to the world-famous Henley Royal Regatta at the end of the month with two crews to represent the Block S on the international stage.
Reischman completes his 21st season as the head coach of the Orange and is one of four coaches in the nation to guide a V8 crew to the IRA Grand Final in each of the last three seasons.
