Orange Duo Wins Gold at U23 World Championships

Orange rowing student-athletes Kamile Kralikaite and Martyna Kazlauskaite won the women's pair gold medal for Lithuania at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships (WRU23CH) in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The duo posted a time of 7:12.69 on the 2,000-meter course, beating the silver-medal pair from the Netherlands (7:14.24), France, Austria, Spain and Germany.

Kralikaite and Kazlauskaite won their heat in 7:23.65, to advance to the final. They beat Spain, Canada, Germany and AIN (Belaruse).

This marks the second time the duo has medaled for their country. At the 2022 U23 World Championships, they won silver in Varese, Italy. They finished second to Greece, and beat Germany, Canada, Denmark and Italy, in the championship race. In their preliminary race Kralikaite and Kazlauskaite placed second behind Canada and ahead of Italy, Switzerland, France and Spain. They won their repechage to advance to the finals, beating Denmark, Switzerland, Spain and New Zealand.

The regatta is the premier event for rowers under the age of 23 and features 22 events. In 2023, the WRU23CH returns to Plovdiv in Bulgaria for the first time since 2017. The regatta course Plovdiv is an artificial canal with total length of 2300m, that was specially designed by the architect Valentine Marinov with chief consultant Svetla Otzetova to meet the contemporary requirements for staging major water sport events.

Kralikaite and Kazlauskaite were members of Syracuse's 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference champion varsity eight that finished eighth at the 2023 NCAA Championship. It was the first varsity eight ACC title in program history.
