Syracuse has 16 rowers on the 2023 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association's Scholar-Athletes list, marking the most student-athletes on the list in one season in program history. Seniors Luisa Gathmann (public health), Hannah Murphy bioengineering), Louise Rath (broadcast and digital journalism) and Haley Uliasz (sport management) earned the honor for the third time in their Orange career, joining 16 former Orange rowers who have achieved this honor three times. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.5 grade point average or higher, compete during the 2022-23 season, and be in at least their second year of eligibility to qualify. Murphy became the first Syracuse rower to win the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award and was also a CSC Academic All-District selection.
Â
Five student-athletes earned CRCA Scholar-Athlete honors for the second time in their career, including Rebecca Farrell(neuroscience), Emmie Frederico (communication and rhetorical studies), Aphrodite Gioulekas (fashion design), Katharine Ryan (master's in public administration) and Elizabeth Vogt (sport management).
Â
Seven rowers made the Scholar-Athlete list for the first time in their Syracuse tenure, including Lauren Coop (applied data analytics), Cassandra Dasco (public relations; finance), Charlotte Ebel (women and gender studies; German language, literature and culture; public relations), Caileigh Grimes (graphic design), Izabela Krakic (international relations), Annika Maxson (international relations/security studies) and Lena Radke (neuroscience).
Â
On the water, Krakic and Maxson earned All-ACC First Team honors and Murphy garnered All-ACC Second Team recognition.
Â
The 2022-23 Orange finished 13th at the NCAA Championship and took second at the ACC Championship. At the NCAA Championship, the varsity eight's eighth-place finish was the second-best result in program history, and the highest finish in the current format of the national championship regatta. The 2001 varsity eight placed sixth as an at-large qualifier. The varsity four placed 13th and the second varsity eight was 17th. The 13th-place team finish ties for the third-best in program history. In 2021, the Orange placed 10th, while the 2002 team placed 12th and the 2016 and 2017 squads posted back-to-back 13th place performances.
At the ACC Championship, every Syracuse boat earned a position on the podium, including gold for the varsity eight, silver for the third varsity eight, and bronze for the second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four, marking the second time in three years the Orange have had every boat medal. The varsity eight ACC championship is the first for that boat, and second Syracuse boat championship, in program history.
