Jacqueline Calla will join the Syracuse University tennis program as an assistant coach and will begin her first season with the program for the 2023-24 academic year. Head coach Younes Limam announced Calla on Thursdayafternoon.
"I'm grateful for the great opportunity to get to coach at Syracuse," said Calla. "I'm especially thankful to Coach Younes and the athletic department at Syracuse University. I'm excited to work with the young women and to be a part of the platform that will help them to grow not only as tennis players, but as young women. I look forward to working to keep moving the program forward."
Calla played varsity tennis at Amherst College from 2015-17, where she was awarded All-NESCAC Honors for collegiate single performance. She was selected as the team MVP and was a part of three NCAA Finals as a Mammoth.
"I am thrilled to have Jackie join our 'Cuse family," said Limam. "Her work ethic, passion for the game, and go-getter mentality will make a positive impact on our team right away. We are excited to have her help build our program and continue in our success."
Calla joins the Orange after a one-year stint with Carrollwood Country Club based in Tampa, Florida as a tennis professional. While there, she provided on-court instruction for private and group lessons.
Prior to her time at Carrollwood Country Club, Calla toured internationally for seven years in South America, competing in tournaments and training with the Peruvian Fed Cup Team. During that time, she also was a West Chase Tennis coach where she led development programs for top-rated junior players seeking to play collegiately.
Picking up tennis as a child, Calla relied on influence from Steve Smith and the late Vic Braden that led her to coaching. She was part of the Steve Smith tennis program, learning how to become a student of the game. Smith helped design and to direct a comprehensive curriculum and plan for students looking to become tennis teaching managers and college coaches. Calla cites Braden's educational contributions as the backbone of that unique program.
Calla earned a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from Amherst College in December 2016. She also completed financial accounting, business analytics and economics for managers coursework from Harvard Business School in the summer of 2016.
