ALBANY, N.Y. - Goals from Braedon Smith, Michael Acquah, and Daniel Burko helped Syracuse men's soccer (4-4-3, 0-2-2 ACC) move back into the win column with a 3-1 victory over UAlbany (2-8-1, 0-1-0 American East) Tuesday night at Casey Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Smith got the game's scoring going early in the night, netting a ball three and a half minutes into the match for the first goal of his young career.
Five minutes later, Acquah doubled the 'Cuse lead on a set piece, heading a deflected shot by Sam Layton past the Purple and Gold's goalkeeper. The junior's goal was his first in a SU kit.
The remainder of the first frame did not see any additional scoring, but the Orange led in both shots (6-4) and corners (6-1) throughout the first 45.
The Great Danes came out on the offensive attack in the second half, taking their first shot of the frame in the 50th minute, but it was 'Cuse who found the back of the net first as Burko sent a strike into the goal. Sachiel Ming provided the helper on the score.
UAlbany, who totaled seven shots in the second half, earned a 71st-minute penalty kick that it converted, but the Syracuse defense held strong, not allowing the Great Danes to find themselves back into the game.
The Orange went on to win, 3-1.
OF NOTE:
Syracuse returns to SU Soccer Stadium for its first Saturday match of the season against Notre Dame on Oct. 5. The contest will start at 7 p.m. and will be live on ACC Network Extra. Admission and parking are free for all in attendance.
