Puck Drop
- It's time for conference action as the Orange open Atlantic Hockey America play Thursday night at No. 12 Penn State. The first series of the season against the Nittany Lions wraps up Friday afternoon with a 3 p.m. puck drop.
- Both Thursday and Friday's games will be carried on BTN+ live from Pegula Ice Arena in Happy Valley.
- The Orange return to the ice after dropping a pair of gritty games against Boston University, which was receiving votes in the USCHO Poll entering last weekend's games. Syracuse battled both nights, including tying the game late in the second period on Jackson Kinsler's third of the year. Syracuse battled to the finish, pulling within one of the Terriers midway through the third but could not find a second equalizer on Saturday.
- Syracuse and Penn State are quite familiar with one another as the square off for the 52nd time in series history, the third-most meetings against a single opponent in program history, trailing only Mercyhurst (66) and Robert Morris (60).
- The Orange have had plenty of success in Happy Valley, coming home with a 15-5-4 all-time record against Penn State on the road, bolstering a 31-12-8 all-time record against the Nittany Lions.
- Syracuse and Penn State will trade Central Pennsylvania for Central New York when the teams meet again at Tennity Ice Pavilion on January 17 and 18.
Can't Score Without the Puck
- It's always tough to score without the puck and the Orange have done a solid job in the circles so far in 2024-25.
- Syracuse has won 237 of its 471 faceoffs this year, a 50.5 percent clip. Syracuse is one of just 19 teams in the country with a faceoff percentage north of 50 percent.
- Winning the draws has helped the Orange rank in the low 30s in both scoring offense (31), racking up 1.78 goals per game, and scoring defense (27), allowing just 2.56 goals per game.
- Tatum White and Nea Tervonen are both ranked in the top 30 nationally in faceoff wins. White has won 91 total and is ranked 12th entering the weekend while Tervonen has won 79 and vaulted up to 28 in the country.
- Syracuse has out-dueled opponents at the faceoff circle in five of nine games to date this season.
Really Gelling Out There
- Despite a slew of new faces on the ice this year, Syracuse's offense is gelling.
- There has been at least one newcomer involved in some way - goal, primary assist, or secondary assist - on 15 of the 16 Syracuse goals this year.
- The only goal this year that did not have at least one fresh face involved was the seventh Syracuse tally of the year as Charlotte Hallett scored with assists to Haley Trudeau and Maya D'Arcy three minutes into the third period of game number two.
- Since that game, at least one newbie has tallied a point in the next nine Syracuse goals.
