SJU’s Three-Point Barrage Defeats Syracuse, 84-70

Syracuse women's basketball (1-1) fell to Saint Joseph's (2-0), 84-70, on Sunday afternoon inside the JMA Wireless Dome. The loss ends a 27-game nonconference home winning streak for the Orange, dating back to Nov. 2019.
'Cuse was led in scoring by senior Georgia Woolley with 19 points (6-of-14 FG, 1-of-4 3FG, 6-of-7 FT) and sophomore Sophie Burrows with 14 points (5-of-6 FG, 4-of-4 3FG). Burrows also led the team in rebounds with seven (three offensive). Sophomore Angelica Velez led the Orange with five assists.
Saint Joseph's Tayla Brugler (29 points) and Mackenzie Smith (25 points) combined for 54 points for the Hawks on 10 made three-pointers between the two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse started off hot, outscoring the Hawks 22-14 in the first quarter. The Orange had an 11-point lead with 1:24 to go in the opening quarter, their largest lead of the day, before Saint Joseph's cut the lead to eight at quarter break. In the second, SJU opened with an 8-0 run to tie the game, before outscoring 'Cuse 25-14 to go into the half with a three point lead. Saint Joseph's never relinquished the lead again, owning a 17-point margin in the third quarter and a 21-point margin in the fourth to secure the victory.
