Syracuse Loses to No. 11 Maryland, 84-73

Syracuse women's basketball (1-2) lost to No. 11 Maryland (4-0), 84-73, Wednesday night inside the JMA Wireless Dome. The Orange start the season below .500 after three games for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

Four SU players scored in double-figures, led by senior Georgia Woolley with 17 points (7-of-17 FG, 3-of-6 3FG). Kyra Wood (16 points), Sophie Burrows (13 points), and Dominique Camp (10 points) rounded out the top scorers for the Orange. Wood recorded her second double-double of the season, leading the team with 11 rebounds (six offensive). Angelica Velez recorded a team-high four assists, leading Syracuse in assists for the second straight game.

Maryland was led by guard Kaylene Smikle with 22 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgia Woolley got the ball rolling for 'Cuse early, scoring the team's first eight points to give the Orange a single point lead halfway through the first quarter. A 7-0 run by the Orange and two offensive rebounds-turned-corner threes from Sophie Burrows gave the Orange a six-point advantage at the quarter break. Maryland responded in the second quarter, going on a 15-0 run two minutes into the quarter to take back the lead. The Terps led by 11 points, 42-31, going into halftime. The third quarter was an offensive showdown, with the Orange scoring 21 points over Maryland's 19 points to cut the lead to single digits at quarter break. Throughout the fourth, the lead would stay with Maryland as both teams battled back and forth thanks to multiple 4-0 runs. The Orange gave Maryland five free-throws late, as Maryland closed out the win.
