Syracuse women's basketball (2-3) lost a tough battle in the final seconds against UAlbany (4-0), 73-70, Wednesday night inside the JMA Wireless Dome. The Orange finished out their five-game season-opening home stand with a season-high 23-point performance by Georgia Woolley.
Â
Woolley's 23 points is the first 20+ point performance by an Orange player this season. Woolley also led the team in assists with four, her first time leading the team this season and 17th time in her Syracuse career. She was helped by Izabel Varejao with her career-high 15-point performance to round out double-digit scorers. Kyra Wood grabbed a team-best nine boards (six offensive).
Â
UAlbany's Kayla Cooper led the Great Danes in scoring with 21 points.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Orange started the game well, as an 8-0 run midway through the first quarter helped propel the Orange to a 10-point lead over UAlbany at the quarter break. In the second, the Great Danes cut the lead to one with a 9-0 run early, tying the game up twice before SU took a one-point lead into halftime, 31-30. Four three-pointers from UAlbany would flip the lead in their favor in the third, putting the Orange down by two coming into the fourth quarter. Sophie Burrows regained the lead for 'Cuse in the first minute of the quarter with a three-pointer. Syracuse and UAlbany would trade shots and the lead for the rest of the quarter, before an offensive foul by the Orange with less than 20 seconds to go in the game would give the ball to UAlbany tied at 70. The Great Danes hit a three with three seconds left, beating the Orange for the first time in program history.
