Syracuse women's basketball (3-3) earned a commanding 82-59 win against Missouri (5-3) on Monday in the Orange's first game of the Emerald Coast Classic in Destin, Fla. Top scoring performances from Georgia Woolley (17 points), Kyra Wood (16 points), Sophie Burrows (15 points), and Journey Thompson (14 points) helped the Orange bounce back to .500 on the season.
Â
The Orange had four players scoring in double figures for the first time since Jan. 2024, as Woolley, Burrows, Wood, and Thompson helped secure the victory. The junior forward was two points away from matching her career high set during her time at Arizona State, while sophomore Sophie Burrows was three points shy of her career high, set during last year's NCAA Tournament Second Round matchup against UConn.Â
Â
Missouri was led by Grace Slaughter in scoring with 13 points, the only Tiger to reach double figures.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mizzou and Syracuse started the game trading buckets, as neither team led by more than seven in the entirety of the first quarter. The second quarter was all Orange, with SU outscoring the Tigers 17-6 thanks to two 6-0 scoring runs for 'Cuse. Syracuse went into the halftime break leading 44-28 and with three different scorers in double figures. In the third quarter, a 7-0 run by Syracuse and eight points from Woolley would cruise the Orange to a 25-point lead at quarter break, before SU took care of business in the fourth to take the victory.
WATCH OUT FOR WOOLLEY
Woolley stuffed the stat sheet leading the Orange in points (17), steals (3) and assists (7) and was second on the team in rebounds (6) in the win. It was the fifth double-figure scoring game of the season for the senior who has scored in double figures in 13 of the last 15 games for Syracuse. Woolley earned the team's ALCO Hard Hat for the first time this season after the game.
JOURNEY FROM THE BENCH
Thompson had a season-high 14 points, two shy of her career-high 16, in the win. She shot 7-for-10 from the field for an impressive 70% while connecting on 6 of her first 7 shots from the floor. She led the Orange bench in scoring and played a season-high 21 minutes. She has recorded at least two rebounds in all six games this season.
Â
BELIEVE IN BURROWS
Burrows fired on all cylinders today, racking up 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting and dishing seven assists, along with grabbing two boards and swiping a steal. Burrows set a new career-high in assists, eclipsing her previous record by four. Her +30 is the highest plus/minus rating of any Syracuse player this season. Shooting 54.3% from the field and 53.3% from beyond the arc, Burrows has scored in 12-straight games for the Orange, dating back to Feb. 22 against Duke.
Â
PAINT THE TOWN ORANGE
Syracuse dominated the paint, outscoring Mizzou 46-22 down low. Fifty six percent of SU's points came from within the paint, helped by 10 second chance points due to 14 offensive rebounds. The Orange earned 41% of their points on layups in the contest.
