'Cuse Scores Over the Century Mark in Opening Night Win

The Syracuse women's basketball team defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles, 108-84, this Tuesday night inside the JMA Wireless Dome. Six SU players scored in double digits, the first time the Orange have accomplished such a feat since Dec. 5, 2021. 'Cuse has won their season opener in every season since the 2006-07 season.
Seven Orange players made their regular-season debuts tonight, including the return of Dominique Camp who has been sidelined since her season-ending knee injury during an exhibition game last season. Freshmen Madeline Potts, Shy Hawkins, Olivia Schmitt, and Keira Scott, as well as transfers Angelica Velez and Journey Thompson also made their regular-season debuts.
Seniors Kyra Wood (19 points) and Georgia Woolley (18 pts) led in scoring for the Orange, with Camp, Scott, Hawkins, and graduate student Izabel Varejao all scoring in double figures. Wood and Scott shared the team-high in rebounds with eight, while Camp dished out a team-best nine assists.
Kyra Wood set a career-high tonight with 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. Wood also recorded eight rebounds and an assist.
Niagara's Safia Kolliegbo led the Purple Eagles with 16 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After trading a pair of baskets in the first minute, SU took the lead with a 7-0 run started by a Sophie Burrows fastbreak jumper. The Orange never looked back, never trailing a single second in the contest.
DOM IS PERFECT BACK IN THE DOME
Graduate student Dominique Camp made her triumphant return to the Dome, after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the lone exhibition game last season. A Coach FLJ product in Buffalo, Camp transferred to the 315 for her fifth year before being sidelined. Camp made her impact felt in her return, shooting perfect from the field with 10 points (3-of-3 FG, 2-of-2 3FG, 2-of-2 FT), four rebounds, a team-best nine assists, three steals and a block.
FIRST TIME? NO PROBLEM
Seven Syracuse players debuted inside the Loud House, combining for 53 points in the contest. Shy Hawkins led all newcomers with 16 points, backed up by Keira Scott with 14 and Dominique Camp with 10. Madeline Potts (7 points), Angelica Velez (4 points), and Olivia Schmitt (2 points) helped round out a memorable performance by the newest Orange.
