SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University women's ice hockey graduate student Bryn Saarela has been named the AHA Forward of the Week, as announced by the Atlantic Hockey American (AHA) on Monday afternoon. The Denver, Colorado native is coming off a massive offensive weekend for the Orange, netting five goals in two games against Robert Morris.
Saarela opened the series with a natural hat trick in Syracuse's 4-1 win over the Colonials on Friday (Dec. 6) night. The forward scored her first goal of the contest at the 12:34 mark of the 1st period, which also proved to be the game-winner. She then scored again at 1:41 and 18:36 of the 3rd period.
The forward continued her scoring-filled weekend the following day in Cuse's second-consecutive 4-1 win over RMU on Saturday (Dec. 7). Saarela scored two goals in the victory to help SU sweep the AHA series. With her five goals across the weekend, she became the first player since Sarah Thompson to net five goals in a two-game series, which she did against Post in the 2022-23 season.
Aside from her five scores, Saarela also tallied two assists and six blocks in the series against Robert Morris. She is also riding a three-game goal streak, and has goals in four of her last five games.
The other weekly award recipients include RIT's Emma Pickering (Defenseman) and Kailey Favro (Rookie), as well as Penn State's Katie DeSa (Goaltender).
The Orange will return from the holiday break on Thursday, Jan. 2, to kick off a two-game series against Minnesota Duluth at Amsoil Arena.
