Syracuse Tennis Loses at No. 5 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Syracuse women's tennis team lost its first contest of a four-match road stretch against No. 5 Virginia (14-2, 6-0 ACC), 5-2, on Friday evening at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Syracuse (9-6, 3-5) duo of Miyuka Kimoto and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya started off the competition with a 6-2 victory against Melodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky in the number one spot. The following two doubles matches resulted in 6-3 losses for the Orange and allowed Virginia to claim the doubles point. Polina Kozyreva and Anastasia Sysoeva dropped their match to Natasha Subhash and Hibah Shaikh in the number two spot, and the pair of Shiori Ito and Emilie Elde was defeated by Sara Ziodato and Blanca Pico Navarro in the number three spot.
The singles event began with a victory for the Cavaliers in the number six spot as Constance Levivier lost to Collard, 6-1, 6-0. Next to finish was the number three spot as Ziodato beat Sysoeva, 6-0, 6-1. Virginia secured the match-winning point as Chervinsky defeated Ito in the number five spot, 6-0, 6-2. In the number two singles spot, Elde dropped her match versus Annabelle Xu, 6-2, 6-2.
Kimoto battled in the number one spot against Shaikh. The Orange junior was bested in the first set, 6-1, but bounced back in the second set and edge out her opponent, 7-6 (7-4). Kimoto stood strong in the third-set tiebreaker and defeated Shaikh, 10-8. Kozyreva claimed victory in the number four spot. After winning the first set 6-1 and dropping the second set 6-2, Kozyreva outlasted her opponent in the tiebreaking third set, 10-8.
The Orange are set to finish the weekend in Blacksburg, Virginia with a matchup against Virginia Tech on Sunday, March 24 at 11:30 a.m. Live results will be available and the match will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra Cross Court Cast.
