SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Makenzie Foster hit a walk-off double as Syracuse beat Georgia Tech, 6-5, Friday at Skytop Stadium.
Foster has recorded an RBI in two straight home games, while sophomore Julianna Verni earned the victory throwing two shutout innings in her Skytop debut.
With the win, the Orange improve to 15-14 and 3-8 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the Yellow Jackets sit at 23-13 and 9-5 in league action.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST THE YELLOW JACKETS:
Georgia Tech plated a pair of runs in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Sara Beth Allen before an RBI single from Tiffany Domingue doubled the visitor's lead.
Syracuse bounced back in grand fashion, plating five runs in the home half of the frame. With the bases loaded, the Orange moved station-to-station on junior Kelly Breen's single. In the next at bat, junior Laila Morales-Alves singled in a pair to give Syracuse a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, senior Olivia Pess and sophomore Madison Knight brought home Breen and Morales-Alves to close out the five-run inning.
Georgia Tech cut into the advantage with a solo home run off the bat of Domingue in the fourth before driving in a pair in the fifth to level the contest at five.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh and Morales-Alves on first, Foster slapped a ball over the head of Yellow Jacket left fielder Madison Dobbins for the walk-off win.
Junior Britney Lewinski started for Syracuse, allowing four runs across four innings in the no-decision. Graduate student Jessie DiPasquale followed Lewinski, striking out three batters in an inning-plus of work. Verni tossed the final two frames of the ballgame, earning her second win of the campaign. All three hurlers made their Skytop Stadium debuts in the victory.
