Syracuse alumna Hannah Murphy and Cambridge University beat rival Oxford in the 2024 Boat Race, a symbol of British tradition and excellence in rowing. Murphy is the first Syracuse coxswain to compete in the Boat Race. The 78th installment of the women's event was held on the 4.25-mile Championship Course on the River Thames in London. It marked the seventh consecutive victory for Cambridge.
Â
A 2023 Syracuse graduate, Murphy was the coxswain of the Orange varsity eight from 2021 through 2023, earning honorable mention All-America and All-ACC Second Team honors as a senior. Murphy coxswained the varsity eight to the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference championship, the first varsity eight ACC title in program history. At the 2023 NCAA Championship, the varsity eight's eighth-place finish marked the second-best result in program history, and the highest finish in the current format of the national championship regatta.
Â
Murphy earned the 2023 Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Orange rower to earn that distinction. A native of Buffalo, Murphy is a two-time Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete and a two-time All-ACC Academic Team selection. She was also a 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District selection. The four-year member of the Orange rowing Leadership Council earned ACC Academic Honor Roll recognition every year at Syracuse.Â
Â
Murphy, who earned a bachelor's degree in engineering, is pursuing a MPhil in Health, Medicine and Society at Cambridge. For her senior capstone design project at Syracuse, Murphy studied Vascular Access for Hemodialysis. She also completed research on fluid mechanics of disease transmission and finger physiology.
