SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse lost both ends of the doubleheader to No. 17 Clemson, 10-1 in six innings, and 7-1, Sunday at Skytop Stadium.
Sophomore Madelyn Lopez went 4-for-5, reaching base in six of her seven trips to the plate across the two games for the Orange, who now sit at 16-17 overall and 4-11 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
With the two wins, the Tigers improve to 27-11 and 11-4 in league action.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
Clemson was disciplined at the plate, aiding in the team's four-run first inning. McKenzie Clark made it a 5-0 ballgame in the second with an RBI single to center.
Sophomore Vanessa Flores cut into the Clemson lead in the home half of the frame, singling to the left-center gap to plate pinch runner Gabby Lantier.
The Tigers tacked on insurance runs later in the game with the longball when Lindsey Garcia hit a two-run homer in the third before Clark hit a three-run shot in the sixth, putting the run-rule into effect.
Millie Thompson earned her fifth win of the season for Clemson, striking out seven across six frames while allowing nine Syracuse hits.
Graduate student Jessie DiPasquale fanned a season-best six batters in six innings of relief, taking over for starter Britney Lewinski in the first inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
The Tigers continued with the long ball to start the second game when Julia Knowler connected for a two-run home run in the first. Clemson doubled its lead in the second following back-to-back singles by Arielle Oda and Maddie Moore.
Clemson looked to break the game open in the first when Lindsey Garcia stepped to the plate with a pair of runners on. Garcia sent the 2-1 offering from Syracuse starter Madison Knight to deep center where senior Angel Jasso pulled the ball back into the park, robbing what would have been a three-run homer to end the frame.
Later in the contest, Knight found her own luck with the long ball, hitting a ball to right where the ball bounced out of Clemson outfielder Kylee Johnson's glove over the wall for Knight's first homer of the season.
Holding a 4-1 advantage, the Tigers scored three insurance runs in the sixth to help lead the visitors for the series sweep.
