Varsity Four Earns ACC Honor
4/9/2024 9:40:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The 8th-ranked Syracuse rowing varsity four is the Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week after beating #5 Yale and Cornell at the Cayuga Cup on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Syracuse posted winning time of 7:06.093, almost two seconds ahead of Yale (7:08.002) and in front of third place Cornell (7:48.923).
The varsity four included two rowers from Syracuse's first race of the season, including Mae Sweeney, who was in bow seat for the second week in a row, and Alice McNeil, who moved from stroke to the second seat. Stroke Elizabeth Vogt and three-seat Charlotte Ebel were the bow pair for the 2V8 in Syracuse's first race of the year. Coxswain Chloe Van de Meulebroecke moved into the varsity four for the Cayuga Cup after coxing the 2V4 in Syracuse's opening race of the 2023-24 season.
Â
"The varsity four got out pretty well with Yale. Early on Yale may have been ahead by just a little and then pretty quickly we drew level," said head coach Luke McGee. "When our V4 hit their stride they were able to move out just a little bit. I thought for a combination that came together pretty late in the week, they did a really good job of maintaining their composure and also in some tricky conditions and then were able to extend a little bit toward the second half of the course. It required a mature, composed performance."
Â
Syracuse will face top 20 programs for the third consecutive race at the UVA Invitational on April 13 and 14 on Lake Monticello in Virginia. The Orange will race #7 California and #18 Oregon State on Saturday morning and #1 Stanford on Sunday morning.
