Kevin Hinkle has been named an assistant coach for the Syracuse men's rowing team and will officially join the Orange on August 6.
Hinkle comes to Syracuse after spending the past two years as an assistant coach at San Diego where he helped the Toreros to a pair of Head of the Charles top-three finishes and a Team Efficiency Trophy at the WIRA Championships.
"We are very excited to have Kevin joining our coaching staff," Syracuse Head Coach Dave Reischman said. "His career as both a rower and coach has been spent in programs that stand out due to their competitive success and positive team cultures. I was impressed by Kevin's ability to articulate what made those teams successful. As we talked to people who worked with Kevin the three phrases that kept coming up were intelligence, hard work, and passion. With those traits, and his experience coaching and recruiting at the Division I level, we believe he can really have a positive impact on our program."
Hinkle was responsible for coordinating all team travel logistics for regattas. His recruiting efforts helped rebuild the San Diego program to full roster capacity with back-to-back classes of 15 and 14 athletes in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
"I am thrilled to be joining the coaching staff at Syracuse University and have the opportunity to work alongside such talented and dedicated individuals," Hinkle said. "I'm honored and grateful to Coach Reischman for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the program. I can't wait to contribute to fostering an exceptional team culture and coaching our athletes to reach new heights of success both on and off the water. Go 'Cuse!"
No stranger to New York, Hinkle spent a year in Saratoga Springs, before the cross country move to San Diego. While in Saratoga he was an athlete and coach with the Saratoga Rowing Association. Hinkle coached middle and high school boys' rowing teams while also supporting boathouse operations.
Hinkle got his start in coaching at Skyline High School in Ann Arbor, Michigian where he was an assistant men's varsity rowing coach during the 2019-20 year.
A two-time ACRA First Team All-American at Michigan, Hinkle was the team's treasurer and managed the $300,000 program budget. He guided Michigan to three ACRA National Championships and was stroke seat for the USA in the Men's 8+ at the 2018 World University Rowing Championships in Shanghai, China.
He earned his bachelor's degree in cellular and molecular biology in 2019 from Michigan. After Michigan, Hinkle attended Newcastle University in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom where he was a member of the men's rowing team as a vice captain. With Newcastle, he was a semifinalist in the Prince Albert Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in 2022. He earned his masters in science with distinction in synthetic biology in 2022.
Syracuse is coming off its fourth-straight IRA Grand Final appearance and the Orange placed seventh in the Ten Eyck Team Points Trophy at the 2024 IRA Championship with all three eights finishing in the Top-10.
