Kohl Makes Olympic Debut Sunday Morning
7/26/2024 3:25:00 PM | Men's Rowing
Former Syracuse Oarsman Nicholas Kohl '23 will make his Olympic debut this weekend at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Kohl is a member of Italy's straight four, which also features veteran rowers Matteo Lodo, Guiseppe Vicino and Giovanni Abagnale. The rowing events begin Sunday, July 28 and conclude on Saturday, August 3 at Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium at the Vaires-Torcy leisure complex.
The men's straight four is one of the most successful boats in Italian Olympic history. Despite just one gold medal dating back to 1948, Italy has reached the podium nine times in the event, most recently with a bronze medal in each of the last two Olympic Games (Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro).Â
Kohl was a staple in Syracuse's varsity eight during his tenure with the Orange. He helped guide Syracuse to three-straight top-five finishes at the IRA Championship Regatta and led the Orange to their first medal (bronze) at the EARC Eastern Sprints in over 40 years as a senior in 2023. Kohl was the team's 2023 Godfrey Award Winner, which is voted on by his peers and is awarded to one teammate every year that embodies everything that goes into being a Syracuse oarsmen. Kohl was admitted to Oxford University following his graduation from Syracuse but decided to postpone his studies with the hopes of making the Italian national team for the 2024 Olympics.Â
In May, Kohl did just that sitting stroke seat on a raining morning in Lucerne, Switzerland. He and his teammates qualified for Paris after winning the men's straight four at the Final Olympic and Paralympic Qualifying Regatta.
Born in Sorengo, Switzerland, Kohl resides in Cadrezzate, Italy. He is the first Orange rower to earn a spot in an Olympic boat since Don Smith at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Most recently, Mike Gennaro was selected as an alternate for Team USA in 2012. For a list of Syracuse's past Olympic qualifiers, click here.Â
