Syracuse alumni Nicholas Kohl '23 advanced to the A Final of the Men's Four at the Paris Olympics on Thursday morning. Kohl stroked Italy to a win in Repechage 1 crossing the finish in 5:52.65 while Romania (5:53.52) narrowly beat host France by seven tenths of a second to earn the final spot in Thursday's A Final. France crossed the finish in 5:53.59 to place third and move on to the B Final.
Kohl, a first-time Olympian, was quick off the start line having the Italians at a 47-stroke rate to immediately jump out front with Romania. Romania led by a whisker over France after the first 500 meters, but Italy passed France and closed in on Romania in the second quarter of the race.
The Italian crew surged past Romania just a few meters before the halfway point closing the first 1,000 in 2:57.74 and opened a multi-seat lead in the third 500m.
Italy was first across the line while the battling crews of Romania and France finished in dramatic fashion with Romania using its famous sprint, at 50 strokes per minute, to earn second. Italy and Romania will face Great Britain, the United States, New Zealand and Australia in the finals on Thursday, Aug. 1.
Italy has won bronze in each of the last two Olympiads in the men's coxless four boat class and will have a chance at a third-straight podium in Paris. Fans can stream Thursday's finals at 6:10 a.m. on Peacock.
