Syracuse alumni Nicholas Kohl '23 and his Italian teammates finished fourth in the men's coxless four A Final at the Paris Olympics on Thursday morning. The former Orange oarsmen stroked Italy to a time of 5:55.07. The U.S. earned its first gold medal in the boat class since the 1960 Olympics and the first medal for a United States crew since 2016 in Rio.Â
The Americans crossed the finish in 5:49.03 holding off a late push from the Kiwis as New Zealand took silver with a time of 5:49.88. The defending World Champion crew from Great Britain took bronze finishing the 2000-meter course in 5:52.42.
"The result disappoints us a bit," Kohl said after the final race of his Olympic debut. "This morning when we woke up we thought we could win a medal. We faced the race as we had planned, a good start to stay in the group and hold on in the central part. It's a shame that we weren't able to hold on to third place, it's a bittersweet result even though it's my first Olympics. I'm satisfied with the path we've developed, but also frustrated with how close we came to the podium."
After a disappointing last place finish in what was dubbed the "heat of death", Italy bounced back to win Repechage 1 on Tuesday morning to earn a spot in the A Final. Italy had earned bronze in each of the last two Olympics (Toyko and Rio).Â
"I am proud to have been on this boat with Peppe, Giovanni and Matteo, who have taught me a lot in recent months," Kohl added. "I'm sorry I wasn't able to repay them by contributing to the conquest of another medal."
Kohl, a 2023 graduate of Syracuse's College of Engineering and Computer Science with a degree in environmental engineering, will attend Oxford University this fall to continue his studies after postpoining high higher learning to chase his Olympic dream.Â
