Five members of the Syracuse men's rowing team represented their countries at the 2024 World Rowing Championships this past week, highlighted by incoming freshman Aidan Montanaro winning bronze for the United States in the Under 19 4+.Â
Montanaro, from Fairfield, Conn., sat two-seat in the United States 4+ entry that finished behind Australia and Italy in Sunday's final. The USA held off South Africa, Ireland and Canada to earn a place on the medal stand. Â
"It was the first time in this boat class the U.S. has gotten a bronze, or a medal at all, since 2018 so we are pretty happy with that," Montanaro said. "Our coach told us it is also the second best the U.S. has ever preformed at U19s, so I am happy to be a part of it. Everyone is a lot different from each other and getting to selection camp was harder to learn how to row with the other guys but after a few weeks of getting to know each other it helped us out and made us a lot faster.Â
I am excited to start rowing with the other guys at Syracuse. To have this experience rowing with people from all over the country this summer will help me adjust to being in a boat with guys from all over the world who have different rowing experiences. It's going to help me become a better athlete and I hope to help others become better as well."Â
Montanaro was joined in St. Catherine's by fellow freshman Niki Strauss, who sat bow seat for Austria's U23 4- that finished fifth in the B final and 11th overall. Additionally, freshman John Testerman served as a spare rower for the United States during the event.Â
Three returning Orange oarsmen, Payton Gauthier, Mack Carr, and Luke Dunleavy, also represented 'Cuse during the World Championships last week. Gauthier, seven-seat of the Canada men's eight that took home fourth place during Friday's A Final. On Thursday, Carr and the Great Britain 2- won the B Final and placed seventh overall, while Dunleavy and the Ireland 4- finished second in the C Final and 14th overall.Â
Dubbed "Super Worlds," this year's World Rowing Senior, Under 23, and Under 19 World Championships were all held during this past week in St. Catharine's, Ontario, Canada at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course. This is the fourth World Championship hosted at the event, with the globe's best rowers last competing at the venue in 2010.Â
