ALBANY, N.Y. - Syracuse men's soccer (3-4-3, 0-1-2 ACC) will hit the road for just its second nonconference match away from SU Soccer Stadium this season, traveling to face UAlbany (2-7-1, 0-1-0 American East) on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The contest, which will be streamed live on ESPN+, kicks off at 7 p.m.
Â
'Cuse Update
Syracuse dropped a 2-1 decision to Wake Forest on Friday, Sept. 27, at SU Soccer Stadium. All three of the game's goals came in the second half, with Sam Layton putting 'Cuse on the board first in the 66th minute, before the Demon Deacons net back-to-back scores in the 78th and 80th minutes to earn the road win.
Â
Graduate student Sam Layton has been the heart and soul of the SU backline this campaign, starting and going to full 90 at center back in all the Orange's 10 contests this campaign. He has helped the 'Cuse defense to allowing one goal per contest.
Â
Gabe Threadgold, who put together a three-point performance against Canisius (Sept. 20) currently leads 'Cuse in points with six through nine contests. Daniel Burko, Nicholas Kaloukian, and Chimere Omeze are all tied for the second-most points on the squad with four apiece.
Â
Scouting the Great Danes
Albany has earned just two wins through 10 games this season, playing to a 2-7-1 record. The Great Danes have picked up wins over Niagara, 3-2, and Marist, 2-0. The team's lone draw came against a strong Cornell team, 2-2.
Â
Most recently, the Great Danes fell to UMass Lowell, 2-0, in their conference opener on Sept. 28. Albany was narrowly outshot, 12-10, but had two more shots on goal despite not being able to find the back of the next. Senior forward Ander Castillo led his team in the loss with five shots, three on goal.
Â
Castillo leading the Purple and Gold on offense has been a common theme this season, as he is the team leader in goals with four. In 2023, the Bilbao, Spain native was the team leader in points with 11 and shared the team lead in goals with four.
Â
Series History
Despite the team's close proximity, Tuesday's match will only be the 13th-all time between the Orange and the Great Danes. The series, which dates back to 1953, had a 50-year hiatus, as after the first contest the teams did not face off again until 2003.
Â
'Cuse leads the series against Albany in wins, 8-2, including a four-game win streak during the 2010s (2012-2015). The teams have also drawn twice (2007, 2021).
Â
Syracuse welcomed Albany to SU Soccer Stadium a season ago, earning a 1-0 win over the visiting squad. Alum Gabriel Mikina scored the lone goal of the match in the 51st minute to lead SU to its win.
Â
Up Next
Syracuse returns to SU Soccer Stadium for its first Saturday match of the season against Notre Dame on Oct. 5. The contest will start at 7 p.m. and will be live on ACC Network Extra. Admission and parking are free for all in attendance.
