
Orange Battle Hard, But Fall to Mercyhurst

Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse University women's ice hockey fell 4-2 to Mercyhurst in a hard-fought AHA battle at Tennity Ice Pavilion on Friday night.
Syracuse (7-16-0, 5-5-0 AHA) narrowed the gap with a goal by Bryn Saarela, assisted by Peyton Armstrong. Freshman forward Stella Costabile scored her first career goal to tie the matchup 2-2 in the third period. Nea Tervonen and Jackson Kinsler provided the assist. Goalkeeper Allie Kelley was a standout in the net, making 43 saves across 60 minutes.
Mercyhurst (11-11-1, 6-4-0 AHA) struck first with an even strength goal by Julia Schalin from Kylee Mahoney and Sofia Nuutinen. Five minutes later Nuutinen found the net and increased the lead 2-0. Both Schalin and Nuutinen each scored a second goal late in the third period. Mercyhurst goalie Magdalena Luggin tallied 16 saves, including five in the first period, eight in the second period, and three in the third.

How it Happened
- The first period was a defensive effort for the Orange as Mercyhurst fired 25 shots, but Syracuse held the Lakers off the board.
- Mercyhurst got on the board first at the 3:16 mark in the second period, as Schalin slipped a shot in to take a 1-0 lead with help from Mahoney and Nuutinen.
- Near the midway point of the second period, the Lakers took advantage of a power play as Nuutinen scored, with assists from Mary Sweetapple and Makayla Javier, extending the lead to 2-0.
- The Orange responded early in the third period when Saarela buried the puck right in front of the net, fed by Armstrong, cutting the lead to 2-1.
- Costabile followed up with a game tying goal, assisted by Tervonen and Kinsler, equalizing the score 2-2.
- With less than three minutes remaining in the third period, Schalin struck again on the go-ahead goal, assisted by Chantal Ste-Croix and Vanessa Upson.
- At the 23-second mark, Nuutinen sealed the win for the Lakers with an unassisted empty-net goal.
- Syracuse out-blocked the Lakers 15-9. Charli Kettyle led the effort with three blocks for the Orange.
- Saarela scored her 12th goal of the season.
- Costabile scored her first goal in a Syracuse uniform.
- The Orange will face No. 6 Cornell on Tuesday, January 14 at Tennity Ice Pavilion for Faculty Appreciation Night.
