Coming off its first ACC victory of the season earlier this week, Syracuse (7-8, 1-3 ACC) ships up to Boston on Saturday for an encounter with Boston College (9-6, 1-3 ACC). The contest at Conte Forum is slated for a 3 p.m. start on The CW.
Setting The Stage
The Orange delivered their first conference triumph of the season Tuesday, defeating Georgia Tech at the JMA Wireless Dome, 62-55. In his second game back from injury, J.J. Starling poured in a team-best 21 points with Eddie Lampkin Jr. producing his fourth double-double of the campaign behind 10 points and 12 rebounds.
In their last outing, Boston College fell on the road to the Yellow Jackets, 85-64. Chad Venning and Elijah Strong combined for 35 of the Eagles' points. Prior to that defeat, the Eagles won their first ACC contest of the season against Miami on Jan. 1. Boston College started its conference slate with a pair of losses to Wake Forest and SMU.
Boston College is led by fourth-year head coach Earl Grant, who led the Eagles to their highest win total since 2010-11 last season with 20 victories. He also took Boston College to the second round of the NIT a season ago.
The Syracuse-Boston College Series
Syracuse leads the series against Boston College, 58-27. The teams split a pair of decisions last season, with Syracuse winning, 69-59, at the Dome and the Eagles defending their home court, 80-75. Prior to Boston College's victory last season, the Orange had won 11 straight meetings between the teams.
The Orange are 23-15 all-time against the Eagles on the road, which includes a 16-8 mark at Conte Forum. Syracuse has not dropped consecutive games to Boston College since the Orange joined the ACC.
Welcome Back, J.J.
Starling has picked up where he left off since returning from his injury, as Syracuse's leading scorer has recorded double figures in each of the last two contests. He has hit double-digit points in all eight of his appearances on the season.
Against Georgia Tech, Starling paced the Orange with 21 points on an efficient 9-of-16 effort from the field. It was his third time surpassing 20 points this season. He added five points and matched his career best with two blocks against the Yellow Jackets.
Starling is averaging 19 points per outing on the campaign. His 38 points from the Orange's double-overtime victory against Youngstown State are still the most by any ACC player in a game this season.
Ring The Bell
After starting the first 75 games of his Syracuse career, Chris Bell has made an impact off the bench in each of the last two contests. Bell had one of his best scoring outputs of the season against Florida State last weekend, as the junior tallied 18 points, tied for his second most in a game this season. He went 4-of-4 from beyond the arc against the Seminoles and 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Bell started hot after entering the game against Georgia Tech, connecting on his first three shots on his way to a 13-point night. On the season, Bell's 16 triples lead the Orange.
Lampkin Delivering
Lampkin Jr. has amassed double-digit rebounds in four of the last five games and is averaging 4.2 offensive boards in that stretch. Two of his four double-doubles have also come in the last five games against Bucknell (18 points, 11 rebounds) and Georgia Tech (10 points, 12 rebounds).
Taylor Time
Lucas Taylor has sparked Syracuse's offense in recent games, most notably from beyond the arc. The junior guard has gone 12-of-24 (50-percent) from deep over the last five contests with multiple makes in each of those games.
Taylor has hit double figures in three consecutive outings, highlighted by a season-best 16 points against Wake Forest. He notched 10 points in Syracuse's first ACC victory of the campaign against Georgia Tech.
Davis Doing It All
Jyare Davis made his fourth start of the season against Georgia Tech in place of the injured Donnie Freeman. He delivered a stellar all-around performance with eight points, nine rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Davis has seven games this season with at least five points and five rebounds. He is third on the team for season in rebounding with 5.3 per game and is shooting over 53-percent from the field while averaging 8.4 points.
Crashing The Glass
As a team, Syracuse grabs 39.1 rebounds per contest, the third most in the ACC. The Orange boast a plus-4.4 margin on the season and have recorded double-digit offensive boards 10 times on the campaign, including in five of the last six contests.
Three different Syracuse players have pulled down 10 or more rebounds in a game this season – Donnie Freeman (seven times), Eddie Lampkin Jr. (six times) and Jyare Davis (one time). Lampkin has double-digit boards in four of the last five outings, while Freeman has hit double figures in two of his last three appearances.
Scouting Boston College
Donald Hand. Jr. is Boston College's leading scorer this season with 14.3 points per contest. His 24 made 3-pointers are the most on the Eagles, as are his 7.3 rebounds per game. Venning (12.3) and Strong (10.8) also average in double figures.
Chas Kelley III has a team-high 38 assists despite only starting nine of Boston College's 15 games. Venning is pacing the Eagles with 22 blocks while Hand Jr. and Roger McFarlane lead Boston College with 12 steals apiece.
As a team, the Eagles rank No. 7 in the ACC in rebounding with 37.3 per contest. Boston College is last in the conference in field goal percentage, making just 42.9-percent of their shots.
Freeman, Lampkin Jr. Make Preseason Watch Lists
Freeman is one of 20 players to make the preseason watch list for the 2025 Karl Malone Award, which recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men's basketball. Freeman, a McDonald's All-American and the second-highest Syracuse recruit in program history, is one of two freshmen to make this year's Malone Award watch list.Â
Freeman has registered six double-doubles on the campaign and the rookie is averaging 15.3 points over his last nine appearances. He has scored 15 or more in six games over that stretch.
Lampkin Jr. is one of 20 preseason watch-list candidates for the 2025 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, which goes to the top center in men's college basketball. Lampkin Jr. is in his first year with the Orange and is averaging 9.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest with four double-doubles.
The list for both awards will be narrowed to 10 in late January, and then to just five in late February. In March, the five finalists for both awards will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar, Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where winners will be selected.Â
Orange fans are encouraged to participate in three rounds of Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, on hoophallawards.com.
