The Syracuse women's basketball team took down Wagner 78-29 at the JMA Wireless Dome on Sunday, Nov. 16. Laila Phelia led the team as she shot a perfect game, going 2-2 in the paint, 2-2 from the arc, and 5-5 for free throws. Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
The first quarter started out slow, as Wagner tallied five fouls in the first three minutes of play. The Orange defense was able to keep the Seahawks scoreless for seven minutes and 42 seconds. The momentum picked up as Sophie Burrows and Phelia helped close out the first quarter with back-to-back three pointers to post a 22-4 lead.Â
Â
Burrows found many second chances to keep Syracuse rolling past the Seahawks. The guard rebounded her own missed field goal to finish the drive in the paint for SU. The junior also recorded a fastbreak steal at center court to add another two to the board in the second quarter. Phelia had an outstanding performance in the first half, going a perfect 4-4 from the line and 3-3 from the field, including a basket from beyond the arc. The Orange entered the locker room with a 43-17 score.Â
Â
Back on the court for the second half, Phelia made a dominant four-point play as her three from the corner bounced in after she was fouled. With a fight on the drive with four minutes left in the third, the Orange collected three offensive rebounds before finding Maddie Potts to finish it off with a three-point field goal. Olivia Schmidt entered the game for the first time this season after a knee injury, knocking down a three from far beyond the arc to bring the fans in the Dome to their feet as 'Cuse led 65-21.Â
Â
Camdyn Nelson found her flame, nailing down back-to-back three pointers late in the final quarter to put the Orange past the Seahawks 78-29. Despite a low scoring quarter, Syracuse still outscored Wagner 13-8, as the 'Cuse bench accounted for all of the boards in the fourth. Â
